Brookside Gardens, a 55-acre horticulture display garden located in Wheaton, MD seeks part-time Seasonal Summer Camp Director to develop and lead 2-5 weeks of summer camp for children. The ideal candidate is energetic and enjoys being outside, working with a diverse team, and inspiring an appreciation of nature with campers.

This position pays at a rate of $16.50 - $22.77 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.

Examples of Important Duties

 

  • Develop and lead outdoor nature and science camp programs for approximately 15 campers and work collaboratively with career staff and other counselors to run summer camp activities. 
  • Responsible for adhering to COMAR as it relates to summer camps including participant health form management, record keeping and health and safety standards.
  • Works with the supervisor to ensure that programs and policies of the program are following those of Montgomery Parks and state regulations.
  • Manage customer service needs of the summer camp such as scheduling, welcoming families, and promptly answering questions in person, through email, or over the phone.
  • Prepare new programs, submit, and edit program descriptions, request supplies for program needs, and develop program materials.
  • Deliver scientifically accurate and age-appropriate programming in engaging formats for different ages of children.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • B.A./B.S. in natural sciences, education, or related field.
  • Six years of experience and specialized training in skill area OR college graduate with two years of teaching experience.
  • At least 21 years of age, able to pass FBI and MD background check.
  • Maryland Natural History knowledge and ability to communicate in another language a plus.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified.

 

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
This position requires work both inside and outside with exposure to weather, dirt, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.). Must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to hike over both paved and unpaved trails. Works independently and as part of a team.

This position is not eligible for benefits.
