In partnership with Willamette Resources and Educational Network (WREN), the Mt. Adams Institute is offering an AmeriCorps internship that focuses on environmental education. The AmeriCorps intern will spend six months working in the beautiful and diverse wetlands of Eugene, OR.

Land Stewards is a career development, AmeriCorps program for young adults, ages 21-30, interested in learning more about public lands/natural resources management or environmental education. The Land Stewards program places participants in a 25-week internship with agencies like the Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife Service and environmental nonprofits throughout Washington and Oregon. 

Position Title: Environmental Educator

Service Dates: May 1, 2023 to October 20, 2023

Location: Eugene, Oregon

Position Description:

The intern will carry out WREN’s environmental education mission. Tasks and projects that will move this mission forward are: 

  • Lead educational field trips for school-aged children in the West Eugene Wetlands 

  • Lead WREN educational lessons for local summer camps and libraries.  

  • Staff the WREN education table at outreach events including WREN Family Exploration days, Bethel Community events, the Mt. Pisgah Mushroom Festival, and others. 

  • Write articles for the WREN newsletter and social media to maintain community engagement with WREN programs. 

  • Co-coordinate WREN and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) events including events for Wetlands Month in May, a Pollinator event, and National Public Lands Day.  

  • Organize WREN lesson materials, and continue the material inventory. 

  • Assist BLM program partners in monitoring and surveying sensitive species throughout the West Eugene Wetlands.  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in environmental education or environmental studies. 

  • Experience teaching children and adults in the outdoors. 

  • Education or experience with the science and natural history of wetlands. 

  • Experience with managing public relations and social media channels. 

  • Fluent in both written and spoken Spanish. 

  • Creativity and excellent problem-solving skills. 

 

AmeriCorps Requirements

  • 21-30 years of age at beginning of service term. 

  • U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident. 

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving education award. 

  • Ability to commit to the full 25-week term of service. 

  • Attend mandatory MAI Orientation, May 1-5, 2023, Intern career training in August (mid-term), and graduation on October 20, 2023. 

  • Selection, placement and retention are contingent upon passing the National Sex Offender Public Registry, state of service and state of residence criminal history check and a national FBI check. These are completed at no cost to the applicant. 

  • Members are eligible to serve up to four terms of service and receive AmeriCorps Education awards for each term of service up to the value of two full time education awards only. 

Compensation Information

Benefits include: 

  • $11,250 living allowance ($450 weekly, pre-tax) paid over term of service. Interns are paid once a month, on the 10th of each month. 

  • $3,447.50 education award (qualified student loans and/or education expenses)
