Imagine spending your days playing games, hiking, canoeing, and camping under the stars. Well, that’s exactly what the Junior Squam Lakes Association’s Environmental Camp Leaders do while guiding campers in grades 3-12. Our primary focus is on nature, exploration, recreational skill-building, and environmental stewardship. Leaders develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate nature-based activities including hiking, canoeing, camping, kayaking, nature games, and crafts. This position can also serve as a paid internship if needed.

Well, that’s exactly what the Junior Squam Lakes Association’s Environmental Camp Leaders do while guiding campers in grades 3-12. Our primary focus is on nature, exploration, recreational skill-building, and environmental stewardship. Leaders develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate nature-based activities including hiking, canoeing, camping, kayaking, nature games, and crafts. This position can also serve as a paid internship if needed. 

The Assistant Camp Director will assist the Director of Education in programmatic, safety, and administrative components of camp. They will support the Director of Education in staff training, the daily operations of camp and directly supervise the overnight portion of the JSLA Program.  They will also assist in the administrative aspects of camp: oversee the health and safety of campers, communicate with parents, assist in the supervision of camp staff and high school aged volunteers, and help camp staff with program planning and fill in when needed. The Assistant Camp Director will be the primary responsible staff member for JSLA and is expected participate in the overnight portion of the program when needed.
 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old with a clean driving record
  • Have at least three years of teaching experience in a camp or environmental education center setting
  • Knowledge of natural history and/or environmental education
  • Previous experience working with and enjoy being with children in an outdoor setting
  • Ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently
  • Comfortable in a leadership role, have strong interpersonal skills, have an enthusiastic and positive attitude, a love of nature and have a willingness to learn.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, computer skills in areas such as word processing, spreadsheets, and a strong commitment to high quality customer service.
  • Experience in outdoor recreation activities (canoeing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking) encompassing strong safety ethic
  • Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is REQUIRED...we can help applicant obtain these
  • Pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) & Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) is REQUIRED
  • Must be available for duration of program (6/12/2023-8/14/2023)

Schedule: This position can start as early as June 1, 2023. Must be availalbe for staff training June 12-23, 2023 and camp June 26 - August 14, 2023.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some weekend days are required for all SLA staff.

Compensation Information

$440 per week starting salary.  SLA benefits include use of canoes, kayaks, and store discounts.
