Education Interpreter I

Essential Functions:

• Provide an exceptional visitor experience for all guests
• Engage guests through daily shows, guided tours, and gallery interpretation
• Implement K-12 school programs for groups of visiting students
• Participate in outreach programs
• Host sleepovers for school groups, scouts and Aquarium members
• Assist in member and community programs
• SCA 1st Responder
• Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies
• Other duties as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Outstanding interpretive skills
• Ability to work with audiences of all ages
• Must be able to give interpretive talks to groups of 10-200 people
• Skills needed to combine creativity, enthusiasm, and exemplary teaching methods to engage visitors in science related activities
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
• Must be a team player and self-motivated
• Ability to maintain a sense of humor
• Must be able to handle live animals
• Professional image required
• Must have a working knowledge of Aquarium exhibits and animals
• Ability to work weekends and evenings

Education and Experience Required:

• Bachelor's Degree in science, interpretation, education or related field
• Minimum of one year of experience in a related field with demonstrated teamwork and interpretive skills

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Valid Driver's License
• First Aid, CPR, and AED Required to either possess or obtain prior to start date

Supervision of others:

• N/A

Physical Requirements:

Often standing, carrying up to 50 lb and driving, sitting; average walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, balancing, pushing and pulling, crawling, computer and phone tasks.

Working Conditions:

Normal office environment, public contact, rotating shifts, weekends and required to wear a radio; outdoor work required.
