Summary

Share the wonder and awe of Mount St. Helens using volcano as your classroom. Our Educators lead hikes, facilitate science studies, and help students build confidence and sense of belonging in the outdoors. 

The Mount St. Helens Institute Educators facilitate meaningful experiences for our guests, including leading hikes and other educational activities, helping students build confidence and a sense of belonging in the outdoors, and sharing their enthusiasm for Mount St. Helens with our guests.  Our guests are primarily groups of youth ages 6-18, their families, and  teachers but also include people of all ages at our rental programs and summer events.

Educators will work with a small group of individuals under the direction of the Science Education Manager and with the support of the Science Education Coordinator.

One to four positions will be available.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Implementation: Education Programs (~65% of time)

  • Collaborate with the education team to plan, prepare for, and implement programs and activities to best meet the groups’ goals and needs
  • Maintain a safe, friendly and fun learning environment for all
  • Lead/co-lead science activities, hikes, and other outdoor learning activities
  • Conduct surveys and other evaluations (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Serve as role model for students, campers and peers: use positive behavior guidance strategies and display maturity, responsibility, flexibility, enthusiasm, and sound judgment
  • Communicate with teachers, group coordinators, and parents
  • Promptly and professionally respond to risks, complaints, and injuries
  • Actively and positively contribute to program debrief meetings

Implementation: Rentals & Events (~15% of time)

  • Provide site tours, expectations and checkout instructions to rental groups upon arrival
  • Deliver excellent customer service to guests during their stay
  • Support events at the Science and Learning Center with tasks such as event setup, cleanup and leading activities
  • Actively and positively contribute to program debrief meetings

Program Support (~20% of time)

  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner with all MSHI and partner staff and volunteers
  • Maintain and organize program supplies 
  • File waivers, evaluations and other program documentation
  • Provide overnight on-call support as needed 
  • If interested, support the ongoing development of the MSHI youth education curriculum
  • Drive vehicles for MSHI activities, including occasionally driving program participants

Other duties may be assigned.

TERM

April 17, 2023 - October 27, 2023. There may be some flexibility in dates. 

Compensation Information

$19.74 -$21.74/hour. Starting rate is $19.74/ hour with a mid-season wage increase possible based on performance.  Educators that work until October 27, 2023, will receive a $500.00 Season Completion Bonus. Low-rent housing available. Meals during programs.
