The Teacher Program Manager directs and oversees the development, organization, facilitation, and evaluation of the Ocean literacy Initiative including the development and implementation of teacher professional development and ocean literacy curriculum.

Summary

The Teacher Program Manager directs and oversees the development, organization, facilitation, and evaluation of the Ocean literacy Initiative including the development and implementation of teacher professional development and ocean literacy curriculum.

 

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Works with the Director of Education and education team to establish and maintain a vision and a comprehensive plan including but not limited to teacher professional development, curriculum resources, learning experiences, and support materials.
  2. Works collaboratively with other departments (husbandry, admissions, volunteer services, operations, etc.) and advocates for teachers and students to ensure the Oregon Coast Aquarium is meeting their needs when on-site.
  3. Work with administrators and teachers to identify strategies for integrating Ocean Literacy into the K-12 curriculum. Assist teachers with the integration of new Ocean Literacy programs/materials into classroom curricula.
  4. Oversee the expansion of ocean literacy teacher professional development and resource integration via statewide outreach and virtual opportunities.
  5. Coordinates, develops, promotes and leads professional development for k-12 and informal educators on marine science, conservation issues and solutions, and preferred pedagogical practices in science education.
  6. Serve as a resource to k-12 educators – connect them with organizations, individuals and resources that can support their learning objectives for students around ocean and environmental literacy.
  7. Develop and implement ocean literacy resources including but not limited to curriculum and education materials that incorporate current preferred practices in conservation/environmental education, science education and project based/hands on learning.
  8. Remain up to date on national and Oregon State Standards including but not limited to Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core as well as preferred practices, current research, education trends and topics related to marine science and conservation/environmental education. Ensure Oregon Coast Aquarium K-12 programming is aligned.
  9. Identify and develop relationships with partners that can support Ocean Literacy in K-12 environments.
  10. Work with other marine and environmental education organizations to advance ocean literacy in the state, which may include participation in the Oregon Environmental Literacy Program, Environmental Education Association of Oregon, Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators, Oregon Coast STEM Hub or others.
  11. Works with outside stakeholders including teachers, principals, school district staff and higher education institutions to promote the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s teacher and school programs. Establish the Oregon Coast Aquarium as an authority on effective instructional strategies for educators and youth around ocean and environmental literacy.
  12. Work with education staff to ensure K-12 programming maintains continued relevancy and support implementation of updates to meet current standards, preferred practices, and pedagogical theory.
  13. Present at career days and other speaker opportunities.
