Key Details
- Position Location: South Vancouver (July and August) and Coquitlam (August)
- Application Deadline: Review of applications begins Jan 15
- Position Dates: May 15-Sept 1. 4-day weekend August 5-8
- Pay Rate: $18.50-$19.50/hr, DOE. All seasonal staff receive paid sick leave.
- Hours of work: Monday-Friday, 8:15-5:00. May-June will be approximately 30 hours per week with most hours 9:00-3:00, July will be approximately 45 hours per week, August approximately 40 hours per week. Total hours will average to no more than 40 hours per week.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Position dependent on funding and may change in response public health directives on group activities related to COVID-19. This may affect employment contracts.
The Position

Do you have a passion for growing, cooking, and sharing food, making connections to the natural world, or building caring communities? You may be the perfect Camp Fresh Roots Assistant Director!
The Assistant Camp Director will work with the Camp Director to plan camp activities, train staff, plan field trips and workshops, oversee health and safety, and generally ensure camp is magical for campers and staff. The Assistant Camp Director reports to the Camp Director, works closely with the Food Program Specialist, and mentors the Program Staff. In May and June, they will also assist with spring field trips, working closely with the Director of Experiential Learning Programs.
Job Duties
- In May and June, facilitate elementary field trips on the Vancouver and/or Coquitlam farm sites using existing curriculum
- With the Camp Director, develop and implement policies, procedures, and programming to ensure camp is educational, fun, risk-aware, and aligned with the camp and organizational philosophy
- Communications
- Manage check-in and check-out
- Send regular emails to camp families about general pre-camp information, reminders, lost and found, program evaluations, and other ongoing communications.
- Programming
- With the Camp Director, create weekly program templates and review staff-created program schedules.
- Plan and organize weekly field trips and workshops
- Support the facilitation of older camp programming and Coquitlam programming.
- Staff Mentoring & Support
- With the Camp Director, plan and facilitate staff training
- During August, be the Site Lead for one of the program sites
- Step in to lead camp groups when staff are absent, or on a break
- Act as a role model for campers and staff
- Health and safety
- Be lead First Aider on site
- Ensure health protocols are followed by staff and campers
- Encourage and model preventative health and wellness measures such as drinking water, wearing sunscreen, taking breaks, etc.
- Supplies
- Managing camp supply inventory
- Purchase supplies as needed within the budget
- Coordinate with Food Program Specialist to purchase food and cooking supplies

Camp Fresh Roots offers joyful, risk-aware day camp programming led by well-trained, caring staff on Fresh Roots schoolyard farms and food lands in South Vancouver and Coquitlam. We welcome approximately 300 campers each summer from a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities, and we offer sliding scale registration to make our camps as accessible as possible. Compensation Package
- Pay: $18.50-$19.50 per hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation
