Camp Ehawee’s Environmental Education Coordinator will be responsible for leading garden and nature focused programs for girls attending Summer Camp as they complete the badge requirements for each week. The Placement will lead activities such as planting, harvesting, and live animal presentations. They will also act as the caretaker for the animals in the nature center. The Placement will provide meaningful experiences for girls as they teach and guide them through nature based curriculum.

Summary

Camp Ehawee’s Environmental Education Coordinator will be responsible for leading garden and nature focused programs for girls attending Summer Camp as they complete the badge requirements for each week. The Placement will lead activities such as planting, harvesting, and live animal presentations. They will also act as the caretaker for the animals in the nature center. The Placement will provide meaningful experiences for girls as they teach and guide them through nature based curriculum.

Position Service Site: Camp Ehawee (Mindoro, WI)

Service Time: May 30 – August 18, 2023  (450 Hour AmeriCorps Term, 40 Hours/Week)  

Requirements: Covid-19 Vaccine required.

 

RESPONSBILITIES:

Programming

  • Lead and implement garden Girl Scout badge curriculum
  • Lead nature center programs and hikes on site
  • Handle live animals (such as snakes, salamanders, turtles, rabbits) for presentations 
  • Supervise campers’ participation in structured and unstructured outdoor activities
  • Be responsible for maintaining the health and safety of campers
  • Help campers follow directions and rules
  • Teach skills necessary to help the camper live comfortably in the camp setting and promote a sense of responsibility toward preservation of natural resources
  • Help each girl learn to respect the rights of others, the environment, and appreciate herself and others

 

Career Exploration/Conservation Skills

  • Assist with development and maintenance of Camp Ehawee garden
  • Construction and maintenance of gardening trails for easy access for individuals of all abilities
  • Non-native plant removal and disposal as well as re-vegetation of native plants
  • Restoration and improvement of area ecosystems as related to assigned tasks
  • Care and supervision of nature center animals
  • Supervise and assist with nature center cleaning, sanitation and care of supplies and equipment

Camp Support

  • Participate in pre-camp staff training
  • Keep records, create reports, and return completed paperwork on time
  • Comprehend and implement emergency procedures, through regular practice drills

 

HOUSING: Members should be prepared to live in communal housing with other members of the program/organization/agency. Members should expect to have roommates, and must inform staff of any housing preferences or required accommodations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Experience in teaching, guiding and working with children
  • Willingness to subscribe to the philosophy of the Girl Scout program and enroll as a Girl Scout member
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Willing to be outside in irregular weather conditions
  • Withstand the physical demands of work which involves some lifting, carrying, bending, and hiking across uneven terrain
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to multitask and shift schedule and priorities to meet changing conditions
  • Upon hire, a criminal background check will be conducted. Service with WisCorps will be considered probationary until all results are returned and have been reviewed

Compensation Information

Living stipend total for whole term = $6,000 ($500 per week) Education Award = $1,824.07 upon successful completion of service.

Living onsite is required, meals are provided.
