Summary

The Alliance is seeking a part-time Education Coordinator to lead K-12 field trips in Spring 2023. The Education Coordinator will introduce school groups to the Park, including to North Park Phase 1, a new section of the park opening this Spring. The Coordinator will have access to existing Freshkills Park curricula, and will have the freedom to interpret or develop new curricula as appropriate. They will work with the Freshkills Park team to coordinate trips, facilitate existing programs, develop new programs, and evaluate program success. 

Position Title: Education Programming Coordinator

Hours: 21 hours a week with some evenings and weekends (Tuesday availability in-person is ideal)

Salary: $28/hour + partial benefits including PTO, health + dental

Work Location: This is a hybrid position, and includes work at Freshkills Park, Staten Island; 100 Gold Street, Manhattan; Remote

Timeline: February - November 2023, with the possibility for extension contingent upon funding. 

About the Alliance:

The Freshkills Park Alliance works in partnership with the City of New York to transform the former Fresh Kills Landfill (1948-2001) into Freshkills Park, which will be the largest public park built in New York City in more than a century. The nonprofit serves as the park’s primary advocate, championing its completion, and increasing public access and engagement alongside government, civic and community stakeholders. With a focus on sustainability and environmental reclamation, the Alliance continuously works to make the park a destination for all.

Position Description:

The Alliance is seeking a part-time Education Coordinator to lead K-12 field trips in Spring 2023. The Education Coordinator will introduce school groups to the Park, including to North Park Phase 1, a new section of the park opening this Spring. The Coordinator will have access to existing Freshkills Park curricula, and will have the freedom to interpret or develop new curricula as appropriate. They will work with the Freshkills Park team to coordinate trips, facilitate existing programs, develop new programs, and evaluate program success.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate spring field trips, including school communications, scheduling, and outreach.
  • Lead, expand and refine school year and summer educational programs in topics such as landfill history and engineering, waste management, park ecology, biodiversity, sustainable design, art, and outdoor adventure lessons.  
  • Support volunteer docents in leading education programs.  
  • Deliver existing recreational and informational public programming and develop new public programs.  
  • Deliver virtual programs to schools as requested.
  • Track participation in park programs for year-end reports and grant reporting.
  • Provide organizational support to the Freshkills Park offices, both Staten Island and Manhattan locations.

Qualification Requirements:

  1. 2-3 years of education experience, preferable with outdoor learning
  2. Comfort leading programs with K-12 students
  3. Demonstrated success working with diverse students, especially youth from low-income communities 
  4. Excitement about working in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions;
  5. Comfort traversing Staten Island by car or public transit
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  7. Excellent communication skills
  8. A valid NYS driver’s license

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  1. Experience in public programming such as recreation, education, art, science and outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking
  2. Experience working with students with disabilities
  3. Bachelor’s Degree in education, biology, environmental science, urban planning, or related field
  4. Knowledge of/interest in the social, political, and cultural landscapes on Staten Island historically and presently
  5. Access to a vehicle for transportation
  6. Proficiency in a language other than English is a plus
