Zoo Knoxville's Education Department is looking for environmental educators that are available on a varying schedule to lead a variety of conservation education programs, primarily in the evenings and overnight. Our programming strives to achieve the Education Department's vision to create conservation leaders by creating opportunities for learning to inspire and empower community action for wildlife and wild places.

Summary

The Seasonal Educator position will primarily be responsible for presenting fun and engaging curriculum-based science programs with live animals both at and away from the zoo. Working hours will vary, but will mostly be evenings and weekends from late February through early November. The position will support the Education Department’s vision to create conservation leaders and to inspire and empower community action for wildlife and wild places. The individual must be able to carry out the position's responsibilities as described below and comply with Zoo Knoxville policies and procedures as they appear in the employee handbook and departmental protocols. The individual must also be of sufficient mental and physical health, as described in the Job Qualifications, to carry out these duties on a daily basis without presenting a danger to his/herself or fellow zoo employees.    

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a team-oriented and positive member of the Education Department this position will be responsible for:

  • Being a presenter primarily for evening programs such as night safaris and bedtime with the beasts, but also youth programs, adult camp, and other formal and informal on-site and off-site (Zoomobile) school and community programs.
  • Regularly being available for evening, overnight and weekend programs.
  • In a timely fashion, completing training to present relevant programs and learning to handle and present most of the animals in our ambassador animal collection.
  • Communicating and coordinating with the Education Department’s Family, School and Community Education Coordinators to determine program and work schedule, including committing to specific dates as needed.

Compensation Information

This is a seasonal hourly position with a pay rate of $12.50 per hour. Housing and benefits are not provided.
