Summary
Under the direction of Canopy’s Education Director, the Environmental Educator will be responsible for Canopy’s growing K-12 tree lessons at schools in East Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Palo Alto predominantly, with upcoming teaching opportunities in Belle Haven (Menlo Park) and North Fair Oaks. Canopy’s lessons are typically taught outdoors, although virtual lessons are also now part of our programming. This is a part-time position (20 hours / week) with occasional night and weekend work.
Overview of Duties and Responsibilities
● Develop and implement systems for scheduling environmental education lessons with school district administrators, principals, teachers, and parent groups at schools in Canopy’s service areas.
● Prepare and teach up to 80 inquiry-based, hands-on science lessons yearly from Canopy’s curriculum to approximately 2,000 students (numbers are subject to fluctuation due to COVID).
● Update curriculum as needed to achieve Canopy’s desired education outcomes, align with school curriculum, and support Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
● Attend Education Committee meetings to set and track programmatic goals.
● Collaborate with the Canopy team on shared goals.
Qualifications and Experience
● One year of full-time work or volunteer experience.
● Knowledge of environmental subject matter or a sincere desire to study and learn.
● Excellent classroom and behavior management skills.
● Demonstrated commitment to equity in education and cultural competency.
● Ability to adapt teaching style and content to meet the diverse needs of students.
● Strong public speaking skills; ability to present in a confident, engaging manner that draws in the audience.
● Organizational skills and ability to follow through with assigned tasks.
● Strongly preferred: fluency in Spanish.
Compensation
● Compensation $20,000 to $25,000 a year, commensurate with experience.
