This is a seasonal, non-exempt hourly position The position requires 40 hours/week from mid-April through October and includes weekends and evenings. The Assistant Naturalist is responsible for teaching school and public programming under the supervision of the Education Director.

Summary

This is a seasonal, non-exempt hourly position The position requires 40 hours/week from mid-April through October and includes weekends and evenings.The Assistant Naturalist is responsible for teaching school and public programming under the supervision of the Education Director.

Specific responsibilities include the following, often in concert with other SLNSC staff members:
• Teaching school and public programming including hands-on outdoor environmental education programs with students or camp groups, live animal outreach programs to libraries, camps, community events, etc., live animal presentations in our trailside amphitheater, outdoor exploration programs for families
• Supporting the efforts of the Education Staff in program development, evaluation, and revision.
• Assuming primary responsibility for individual projects related to the maintenance of the live animal collection and education projects.
• Assisting with Trails and Exhibits work including closing the exhibit trail one-two days per week.
• Assisting in the design, construction, production, maintenance, and refurbishing of educational materials/props/exhibits.
• Helping to organize, coordinate, and implement some SLNSC special events.
• Occasionally assisting with care and training of the live animal collection.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree, with a major in the natural sciences, environmental education, or a related field
• Enthusiasm, motivation, a willingness to learn, and a desire to work with people and animals
• Prior teaching experience with a variety of age groups in a non-formal environmental education setting

COMPENSATION: $15.00 - $16.00/hour, depending on experience.
