About the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation (Catawba Riverkeeper):
Founded in 1997, the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation was the 21st waterkeeper organization in the United States. Now a part of an international movement of waterkeepers that boasts over 400 local organizations, we preserve and protect the waters of the Catawba-Wateree River Basin for generations to come. Our 5,000 square mile river basin includes over 8,900 miles of waterways. Catawba Riverkeeper employs a professional staff of scientists, educators, and passionate environmentalists executing programs across the basin. A committed group of board members, volunteers, and community members assist in executing Catawba Riverkeeper’s education, engagement, and advocacy programs.

Part-Time/Seasonal Positions:
Education Coordinator
The Education Coordinator is responsible for leading the organization’s youth and adult educational and recreational programs related to the Floating Classroom on Lake Norman and the CREEK program throughout the Charlotte Region.
Educator
Educators are the lead instructors for the implementation of educational programs under the supervision of the Education Manager. They assist with curriculum development and execution, group management, and assessment for adult and youth programs. They provide outreach and engagement through educational programs about the Catawba Wateree River Basin and the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper. This position is mainly seasonal with the majority of programs scheduled during the summer months with the possibility of year-round part-time employment. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Engagement programs as available.
Education Assistant
Education Assistants work alongside Educators under the supervision of the Education Manager. They are responsible for group management, program preparation, and program implementation for adult and youth programs. They provide outreach and engagement through educational programs about the Catawba Wateree River Basin and the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Engagement programs as available.
Education Counselor
Counselors are responsible for being motivational guides for campers within our summer camp programs the weeks of June 13th 17th, July 11th-15th, and August 8th-12th. They are the face of our organization to provide a safe and fun atmosphere through experiential learning. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Engagement programs as available.
Kayak Operations Manager on Duty
Kayak Operations Manager on Duty positions (MODs) are responsible for leading the overall kayak operations for the day. They support day-of kayak operational staff including Kayak Guides, Kayak Techs, and Shuttle Drivers as well as assist various Riverkeeper managers and directors in executing programs. MODs are the public face and lead of the Riverkeeper’s kayak programs while communicating our mission and activities. MODs ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for staff and guests through efficient logistical management and troubleshooting issues as they appear with professionalism and care. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Education programs as available.
Kayak Technician
Kayak Technicians (Kayak Techs) are responsible for being the face of the organization through kayak experiences offered to the public. They execute kayak programs from set-up to breakdown through high quality service while educating guests about the area’s waterway and the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Education programs as available.
Kayak Guide
Kayak Guides (Guides) are responsible for various on-the-water guided programs. They are the public face of the Riverkeeper. Their responsibilities include executing kayak programs from set-up to wrap-up while delivering high quality service through program preparation, activity instruction, and program content along with sharing the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper while maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all guests and support staff. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Education programs as available.
2022 Summer Internships
Riverkeeper Intern
The Intern will have a unique opportunity with an internship working both indoors analyzing data and outdoors with field work. Work will include analyzing pollution data, managing projects leading to direct policy change, assisting with waterway patrols, collecting samples in the field, and running laboratory equipment.
Engagement Intern
The Engagment Intern will hold a dynamic position the summer of 2022. They are responsible for assisting with cleanups and on the water programs, as well as day-to-day activities alongside the Engagement Manager.
Environmental Education Intern
The Environmental Education Intern will hold a dynamic position the summer of 2022. They are responsible for assisting with camps and summer programs, as well as day-today activities alongside the Education Manager.
