The Natural Resources Specialist 2 is a mid-level, experienced field worker seasonal position that assists Natural Resources Division staff in day-to-day or project related management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, or research and monitoring of the natural resources in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio. This position works with the Forest Health Project Coordinator on a variety of forest health survey projects.
Summary
The Natural Resources Specialist 2 is a mid-level, experienced field worker seasonal position that assists Natural Resources Division staff in day-to-day or project related management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, or research and monitoring of the natural resources in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio. This position works with the Forest Health Project Coordinator on a variety of forest health survey projects.
- Participates on a variety of early detection field surveys, and plot-based research
- Identifies trees (hosts) and associated pests/pathogens, including but not limited to hemlock (HWA, EHS), beech (BLD), tree-of-heaven (SLF) and Oak Wilt.
- Records and maintains accurate, well-organized data in written and electronic format
- Safely operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors, and other related
- Collects samples (seeds, branch/twig, soil, picture) for testing
- Prepares plant voucher specimens.
- Must have completed two years of college courses with relevant course work and/or educational experience in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields. At least six months of field experience, research experience, or other directly relevant job experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio for all positions listed in the addendum except for Natural Resources Management Crew.
- Ability to learn standard vegetation sampling protocols quickly.
- Familiarity with Ohio Flora
- Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas
- Ability to collect accurate, unbiased information.
- Energy and eagerness for field work and the ability to work independently and in team settings.
- Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule as the field work demands.
