Our free and low-cost events create new and exciting opportunities for tens of thousands of NYC residents and visitors to learn, grow, and experience all that Brooklyn Bridge Park has to offer.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s Education Program is dedicated to teaching people of all ages and backgrounds about Brooklyn Bridge Park’s unique built and natural environment. We aim to create diverse and experiential programming that will inspire stewardship and life-long learning. In our school programs, we use the park as a laboratory for hands-on investigation and incorporate inquiry-based and experiential learning into STEAM lessons. During Open Hours in the Environmental Education Center, the public can interact with the space and learn about the park’s ecology, history and design.
The Conservancy Part-Time Educator will help facilitate our school programs and weekend education programs in the Environmental Education Center. This position is estimated to be 19 hours/week, with a start date between March 29- April 1. The role will begin on a Tues, Wed, Sat schedule. Preference will be given to those with schedule flexibility, including working full weekends beginning in the fall.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
- Assist in teaching school field trips, early childhood education programs, and public fishing events
- Work with Education Team to refine and facilitate educational birthday parties on weekends
- Help facilitate learning during free, drop-in Open Hours at the Environmental Education Center
- Responsible in assisting with the operation and maintenance of the Conservancy’s Environmental Education Center (including animal care, exhibits, and general upkeep)
QUALIFICATIONS
- Recent graduate or currently studying environmental education with a strong passion for developing as an educator
- Spanish proficiency preferred, but not required
- Dependability and flexibility in scheduling required
- Knowledge of marine science, urban ecology, and/or sustainability and enthusiasm for Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Deep commitment to positive youth development
- Self-starter with positive, can-do attitude and ability to communicate effectively
- Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as the ability to perform physical labor (able to lift 40 pounds, regularly) and perform work at the natural shore line and on unstable ground
NYC requires City contractors to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The Conservancy has City contracts and thus requires all employees to be fully vaccinated and show proof of their vaccine status prior to their start date. Additionally, all employees are required to follow our COVID-19 protocols to control the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, partners and program participants.
COMPENSATION
$20 per hour.
This position is estimated to be 19 hours/week, with a start date between March 29- April 1. The role will begin on a Tues, Wed, Sat schedule, with potential to increase to be Tues, Wed, Sat & Sun in the fall.
