Zoo Camp Counselors will be working with our full time education staff and Zoo Camp Interns to develop and implement themed camp lesson plans, materials, and evaluation tools for our camp programs for children ages 4-17.

Summary

Zoo Camp Counselors will be working with our full time education staff and Zoo Camp Interns to develop and implement themed camp lesson plans, materials, and evaluation tools for our camp programs for children ages 4-17.  The Brandywine Zoo Camp offers children the chance to spend a week at the zoo learning about animals, zoos, and wildlife conservation. Each week is filled with Zoo visits, live animal presentations, crafts, animal-related games, songs, stories, and learning projects. A Zoo Camp Counselor will be responsible for the organization and management of these activities. A Zoo Camp Counselor will also work with adult and teen volunteers, live animals, and will help children learn about our natural environment in a non-traditional setting. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled. Work is performed under various weather conditions.

Job Duties:

  • Plan and lead daily activities for summer camps.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children aged 4-17.
  • Develop and implement hands-on activities, games and crafts.
  • Follow our guidelines as outlined in our Zoo Camp Handbook for medical situations, behavior problems, and other camper situations
  • Responds to visitor questions and educates visitors about the animals. 
  • Safely handle and present wild/exotic animals.
  • Keep camp space clean and organized
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday (except for training days)
  • 37.5 Schedule for no less than 7 weeks, no more than 10 weeks, throughout the summer season
  • Position starts no later than June 3 and runs through August 26, 2021. 
  • Hours may be scheduled between 7:00am and 5:00pm.
  • June 4 is required, as are the weeks of June 6, June 13, and Aug 8.
  • Holidays may be required.

Conditions of Hire:

  • Must provide proof of negative Tuberculosis Test within the last 12 months before start date.
  • Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Delaware Zoological Society does not provide sponsorship for holders of H-1 B Visas
