This spring, The Crest will operate six weeks of Outdoor School programming as part of Oregon’s Outdoor School for all 5th and 6th Graders. As we emerge from the pandemic, the Crest will offer three consecutive day-long visits (Tuesday through Thursday) May 3rd through June 9th. Should the ideal candidate desire a 40-hour work week or employment beyond June 10th, see below for possible extensions.

Summary

Hours and Dates: The Education Coordinator will be working 20 hours per week during the month of April to prepare for programming as well as training staff the last week of April. During the month of May and the first two weeks of June, the EC will be on site at The Crest from 8am to 4pm Tues/Wed/Thurs while Outdoor School is in session. Mon/Fri are half time (4 hours per day) preparation days. The Education Coordinator (EC) is an integral part of the daily operations for the Outdoor School programs hosted at The Crest. This will be an outdoor, roving position every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Mondays and Fridays will be four-hour administrative days. As the main contact between teachers as well as the program Leads and Assistants, the EC will be on site and available throughout the duration of each three-day-long program. 

Job activities and functions:

Education Coordinator partners with the Education Director in managing communication and scheduling between school teachers, chaperones, busses, staff, as well as additional personnel at The Crest and Willow-Witt Ranch.

Education Coordinator partners with the Education Director to perform program evaluations with surveys from teachers, chaperones, parents, and students as well as self-evaluation tools as provided by OSU Outdoor School.

During Outdoor School, Tuesdays through Thursdays, the Education Coordinator is outside and on site at all times, setting the tone for the program with the Welcome, Wrap-ups and other student activities. Administrative work as well as reporting to other The Crest staff should be scheduled for Mondays and Fridays as much as possible.

The EC will be in a roving position throughout the day, filling in where needed for program Leads and Assistants, and helping to ensure that each student’s physical, social, emotional and behavioral needs are met.

Maintaining and elevating the high quality of programming that has come to be expected at The Crest.  

Hiring, Training and regularly reviewing performance of instructors and assistants and course correcting as needed.

Working with the Education Director in the creation and maintenance of a culture of self-care for both staff and students.

The EC will partner with the Education Director to become well familiar with the ACES study, trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning tools, and the trauma-informed care document provided by ONREP and subsequently assist in training program Leads and Assistants on an ongoing basis throughout the season. These elements are essential to the program offering and are part of the integral culture of The Crest. 

The EC will find an appropriate time on either Friday or Monday to conduct an in-person staff meeting to assess the success of each element of the program and create improvements as needed. This time will also be used to continue training staff in ACES/TIP/SEL.

A W9, signed contract, background check and invoicing schedule will be agreed upon prior to working

ACES trained, CPR, and First aid trained either prior to or in short order. 

 

Desired skills and experience of a successful candidate:

  • Education. Masters degree or equivalent experience in Environmental Education and/or teaching. 
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people.
  • Leadership experience. Empowers and engages those around them. 
  • Personnel management. Ability to manage staff, teachers, and chaperones, as well as students on a daily basis. 
  • ACES/TIP/SEL knowledge and experience.
  • Possible summer extension: Additionally, 10 weeks of Summer Day Camp programming is available to 6 to 11 year olds. 
  • Possible admin extension: Should the ideal candidate desire a 40-hour work week, there is the possibility of 8-hour days performing general administrative assistant tasks for The Crest. Some of this work may be performed at home.
