QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Twenty-one years of age or over preferred (per NYS Department of Health regulations)
  • Education or experience in Aquatic Safety and Management
  • Current certification in Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterfront Safety Instruction, Lifeguard Management and Training, Swimming Instruction, CPR and Advanced First Aid (per NYS Department of Health regulations) from the American Red Cross, YMCA, or an approved organization having equivalent standards
  • At least three years (twenty-four weeks) of waterfront experience in an organized resident camp, or related experience
  • At least one year experience in a supervisory aquatic position, with programming and training experience
  • Demonstrated skill and proficiency in a variety of appropriate aquatic sports and activities, including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing
  • Strong personnel management skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Test and classify swimming abilities of campers and staff.  Utilize staff abilities to the best advantage in carrying out the waterfront program in swimming, life saving, canoeing, boating, sailing, windsurfing, motor boating, fishing, etc.
  • Organize, conduct, and supervise scheduled aquatic programs, which include but are not limited to, regular swimming and boating periods, Polar Bear, Staff Swim, Swim Clubs, Aquatic Clubs, Special Outings, and Free Boating and Canoeing.
  • Initiate strict water safety and Learn to Swim programs in keeping with the American Camp Association Standards and YMCA requirements.
  • Develop and operate a well-planned program of instruction in swimming and small crafts (boating, sailing, canoeing, etc.)  Measurable objectives must be central to this plan, (i.e. each camper will have the opportunity to sail during each week, etc.)
  • Schedule swim instruction, boating, and lifeguarding staff
  • Take attendance at each program start and completion
  • Maintenance, installation, acquisition, and dismantling of of waterfront equipment and reporting needs to Director or Property Manager
  • Train all staff for waterfront emergency procedures. Train and evaluate instructors and lifeguards in appropriate skills and methods for all aquatic activities. Inspect, supervise and evaluate daily lessons and written plans. Coordinate/direct regular in-service training with waterfront staff. Maintain records of in-service training, relevant certifications for all waterfront staff, regular AED maintenance checks, and lifeguard skills verifications.
  • Work with the Director and Health Department to ensure aquatic safety of all participants.
  • Maintain the buddy board system and update as necessary.
  • Coordinate with other program directors (Day Camp, Teen Camp, LIT’s, PYC, etc.) who wish to use the waterfront
  • Provide First Aid for injured aquatic facility users.  Write necessary incident reports for all injuries.
  • Develop end of season report to include staff evaluations, program descriptions, lesson plans, incident reports, equipment inspections and inventories, and recommendations and suggestions for improving facility and program.
