The Darien Nature Center is hiring a Lead Teacher for their 6-week Summer Camp. The Lead Teacher is responsible for the daily activities of a group of twelve children, ages 4-6, with the help of high school aged counselors. The ideal candidate will be a team player, have a love for sharing nature with children and enjoy working outdoors.

Summary

The Darien Nature Center is hiring a Lead Teacher for their 6-week Summer Camp.  The Lead Teacher is responsible for the daily activities of a group of twelve children, ages 4-6, with the help of high school aged counselors.  The ideal candidate will be a team player, have a love for sharing nature with children and enjoy working outdoors.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with camp counselors to prepare and lead daily activities based on provided curriculum
  • Secure the safety of campers at all times
  • Gather and utilize available materials, artifacts and live animals to enhance lessons
  • Be an engaged teacher, listening to your campers and providing a fun, safe and welcoming environment
  • Convey a love and respect for the natural world
  • Be willing to get dirty, handle animals, and engage deeply in nature
  • Set up and break down tables, tents and supplies each day
  • Have positive interactions with parents and staff
  • Lead an orderly and enthusiastic drop off and dismissal
  • Report to the Camp Directors any concerns or challenges related to designated class
  • Additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Appreciation and respect towards animals and nature
  • Enjoy spending time and interacting with young children 4 - 6 years of age
  • Being able to multi task and stay calm in stressful circumstances
  • Ability to lift about 40 pounds (camp supplies, children, animal enclosures)
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities and creativity
  • Self-motivated
  • Punctual and dependable

Qualifications:

  • Currently hold or be working towards a college degree
  • Experience with young children
  • Current CPR certification or willingness to acquire

Hours:
Orientation/Training/Set up: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 22-24, 10:00 – 2:00
Camp Dates: June 27 – August 5 (no camp on 7/4)
Camp Staff Hours: Monday – Friday 8:45am -2:45pm
