The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera, The Bahamas. The Semester is the flagship Island School program offering a single immersive semester for high school sophomores and juniors. Thus, we seek semester teachers with a demonstrated career commitment to experiential education and a love for teaching and learning.

Summary

As a member of the Semester administrative team, the Dean of Students will work closely and cooperatively with the Director of the Semester program, the Dean of Faculty, and other school leadership. The Dean of Students primary role is to guide student support and well-being and uphold the rules and expectations for students as outlined in the Student Handbook. The Dean of Students is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive, inclusive and safe community culture and facilitating student leadership. As a residential school, the Dean supports and advises two dorm heads in their residential oversight of students. Along with the Semester faculty, the Dean participates in experiential camping and kayak expeditions, assists with SCUBA support, contributes to our community engagement program, and supports a medical response team in a wilderness setting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of student life operations, including student physical and mental health and well-being, student discipline, residential life, and the overall student experience
  • Along with other program administrators, take a lead role in ensuring equity and belonging for all students
  • Facilitate student leadership opportunities and guide student growth and development
  • Co-lead sea-kayaking and/or camping expeditions
  • Hold the overall vision for our advising program and mentor faculty advisors
  • Work closely with the Director of the Semester and Dean of Faculty on programmatic schedules and activities, including weekly community meetings
  • Work closely with the Director of the Semester to maintain clear and consistent communication with students and families on all aspects of student life and student support
  • Oversee and mentor faculty on student and residential life duties, including advising, student support, student health and wellness
  • Advise 4-6 students per semester

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Prior experience in the following areas: residential life; teaching; experiential or outdoor education and managing others
  • Must have passion and enthusiasm for working with adolescents in a residential setting, and for supporting students in intellectual and wilderness pursuits
  • A commitment to culturally diverse teaching and demonstrated intercultural competence
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain current WFR & CPR certifications
  • Must have a willingness to work non-traditional hours (evenings and weekends) and adaptability and flexibility for remote island living
