Hours of work:            Schedule is flexible and will be determined with final candidate. Hours will fall between 9am to 5pm, Monday–Friday. Occasional need for weekend or after-hours work as related to events and other projects. Total of approx. 12–16 hours/week for 16 weeks with the opportunity to extend.

Our current annual budget is $20 million.

Position description: 

The Seattle Aquarium is seeking a creative social media intern who is passionate about ocean conservation and digital storytelling. You will work with the marketing manager to develop content to engage our audiences across all social channels. Our social media platforms reflect our mission of Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment in a variety of ways. You will help us tell the story of our conservation work, the animals in our care, how ocean health is critical to climate resilience, and what actions people can take to protect our world’s one ocean. You will play a critical role in maintaining and growing our social channels by bringing new, creative ideas to the table and approaching this work with a learning mindset. Once your internship is complete, you will come away with the skills to communicate in a brand’s voice, knowledge of how to structure social media campaigns, and experience working with multiple stakeholders to tell a cohesive story. Possible campaigns include highlighting existing events like Shark and Ray Awareness Day or Sea Otter Awareness Week.

 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assist with managing, curating, pitching and creating videos, images and copy to be utilized across all of the Aquarium’s social channels, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, to promote Aquarium attendance, conservation programs and events.
  • Creatively edit short video stories for various platforms, working with digital marketing manager. Assist with clipping, resizing, recutting and otherwise optimizing the edit for each platform. Manage final export for delivery to each platform.
  • Scheduling content on platforms, organizing information internally, miscellaneous tasks, and logging and compiling metrics for all of the Aquarium’s channels, including tracking on campaigns.
  • Develop a social media campaign that meets the needs of a variety of stakeholders.
  • Assist with community management across all social channels by interacting with content from visitors and responding to messages and comments.
  • Other duties of a comparable level/type as assigned. 

Experience you bring:   

  • Interest in the fields of marketing, advertising and communications.
  • Passion for and commitment to the ocean.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication (verbal and written) and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency on social channels like Tik Tok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Premiere and comfort with AfterEffects, Photoshop and Illustrator is a plus, but not required.

 

Working conditions:

This position will work a hybrid schedule and is subject to the Seattle Aquarium’s telecommuting guidelines.  

When on site, most of the work is performed in a typical office setting at a computer workstation for the duration of your shift in a semiprivate work area.  
Frequent interruptions, walking, standing and sitting for extended periods of time.  
Some exposure to elements as employees are in campus environment with multiple buildings and outdoor and semi-covered areas.  

Pay and benefits: $18.35/hour + $0.75/hour to assist with transportation costs. Temporary staff are not eligible for benefits but accrue paid sick time and are paid an additional $0.75/hour to assist with transportation costs.
