Featured Open Partner Positions, San Francisco Peninsula
For the 2022-23 cycle beginning in September 2022, Climate Corps partners offer a wide variety of fellowship placements. Partner positions will continuously be added to our website throughout spring and summer 2022. Here are some of our featured fellowships in the San Francisco Peninsula:
Energize Colleges Fellow, San Mateo County Community College District (San Mateo)
The San Mateo County Community College District is a community college system in California with three institutions: College of San Mateo in San Mateo, Cañada College in Redwood City, and Skyline College in San Bruno. The district serves more than 25,000 students each day with both day and evening classes. This Fellowship will be housed in the Facilities Maintenance, Operations and Planning Division, the Sustainability Team which has hosted over nineteen Fellows over the past eight years.
The Energize Colleges Fellow oversees program implementation and student intern mentorship for the Energize Colleges program at the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD). Funded by an innovative partnership through Peninsula Clean Energy, the successful candidate will supervise, coach, and manage a group of ten passionate student interns engaged in energy efficiency, equity, and sustainability efforts in the community. Under the general direction of the Energy and Sustainability Manager, the Fellow will design and guide the program through the stages of partner outreach, intern recruitment, administration, intern supervision, and reporting on program deliverables. This role is a 10-month, full-time position with numerous opportunities to creatively drive campus sustainability engagement, workforce development, and student empowerment through sustainability education and project-based learning. Green Facilities Fellow - AmeriCorps, San Mateo County Office of Education (Redwood City)
The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) supports local school districts in San Mateo County by providing services that can be done more efficiently and economically at the county level. SMCOE serves 175 schools in 23 districts, which range from urban environments to schools in rural nature preserves. On the whole, San Mateo County serves 95,502 students of whom 33% are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 41% qualify for free and reduced lunch. The dedicated and professional staff at SMCOE provide many systems of support through a variety of instructional, business, and consulting services. The three main functions of SMCOE are: 1) Support and Regulatory, 2) Educational Leadership and Coordination, and 3) Direct Student Instruction.
One of the Educational Leadership initiatives that SMCOE oversees is the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative (ELSI). This initiative provides "backbone support" to San Mateo County schools in prioritizing environmental literacy and integrating environmental sustainability and climate-resilient practices across a school's campus, curriculum, community, and culture.
This fellowship will support the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Initiative’s (ELSI) Green Facilities Technical Assistance Service Offerings. Through a robust offering of programs and services, this initiative promotes environmental literacy and helps prepare leaders to integrate environmental sustainability and a climate ready mindset, across a school community's campus, curriculum, community and culture. Transportation Equity & Safe Routes to School Fellow - AmeriCorps, San Mateo County Office of Education & City of South San Francisco (Redwood City / South SF)
The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) is located in Redwood Shores and supports public schools throughout the county in a variety of initiatives that seek to provide equity and excellence in education for more than 90,000 students in San Mateo County. The fellow will be placed in the Safe and Supportive Schools department and will specifically work with the Safe Routes to School program.
The City of South San Francisco (SSF) City Manager’s Department: The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the City of South San Francisco. The City Manager’s Office implements policy decisions of the City Council, provides leadership and strategic direction to the city’s leadership team and organization as well as ensuring that initiatives and programs align with the City’s mission and reflect the values of our community. The City Manager's Office provides overall guidance to all City operating departments and is responsible for the administration of City programs to ensure the delivery of high quality services in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This includes oversight of major City-initiated projects, outreach to and involvement with community members on issues of local concern, direction of the annual budget process and coordination of City Council agendas.
With the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE), the Fellow will support several elementary schools and senior centers in close proximity to the schools in north San Mateo County based on a Safe Routes to School Equity Analysis. This intergenerational initiative seeks to equip students of selected schools and senior citizens in San Mateo County with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the built environment as pedestrians or bicyclists, and make the connection between transportation choices, human impact on the environment, air quality, and individual and community health. SMCOE seeks a candidate who can develop and implement this project and related presentations and events.
With the City of South San Francisco, the Fellow will implement a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program throughout schools in SSF through the six E’s framework. This includes education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement, evaluation, and equity. This framework ensures traffic safety measures are in place to encourage more students and families to walk/roll/take transit to school. The Fellow will support SSF’s Every Kid Deserves a Bike (EKDAB) program, including but not limited to, educational outreach, encouragement events such as Bike Month, serve as a liaison between the City and SSF elementary schools and SSFUSD and other administrative duties as needed. AmeriCorps Qualifications:
- Be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
- Have a high school diploma/GED
- Be 17 years old or older
- Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
- Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
- Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
- Live in the state of California
Desired Qualifications (General):
- Availability and commitment to the full-time fellowship program. Fellowships typically range from 10-12 months in length and will begin in September 2022. Most positions currently include some on-site work, unless noted otherwise in the position description.
- Climate Corps Fellows must have completed a 4-year degree by the time the program cycle starts. We are looking for emerging professionals with:
- An educational background in environmental policy, science, engineering, sustainable management or planning degrees (volunteer and internship experience will be considered).
- A general understanding of clean energy or environmental policy.
- Community outreach and communications experience.
- A connection to the placement location. This is an equal opportunity position and we prefer to place a candidate who already lives in the region being served.
- Genuine commitment to anti-racism, willingness to work in racial equity frameworks, experience in addressing racism and racial equity with team members and programmatically.

Once the application is complete and has been reviewed, applicants who qualify will be contacted for an interview.
