Summary
Earth Discovery Institute (EDI) is seeking a part-time Education Coordinator to support environmental education programs and events for students, families, and communities in the San Diego region. This is a new position that requires outdoor field trip support and indoor administrative responsibilities.
ABOUT US: EDI is a non-profit organization that inspires stewardship of San Diego’s native biodiversity through environmental education and conservation. Guided by the principles of inclusivity, personal empowerment, science-based curricula, collaboration, and the intrinsic value of biodiversity, we provide educational programs and outdoor recreation, primarily serving communities in San Diego’s east county.
DUTIES: The Education Coordinator will work with EDI’s Education Director, primarily to support environmental education programs and conduct outreach. Responsibilities include:
- Communicate with teachers, schools, school district personnel, and community representatives to schedule and coordinate all aspects of EDI’s educational and recreational programs and events
- Keep EDI’s Education Google Calendar updated with all relevant field trips/events
- Schedule EDI staff and volunteers supporting education programs and events
- Help recruit volunteers to support EDI programs and events
- Assist with the development/refinement of lesson plans, curricula, and other resources; ensure curricula adheres to current standards
- Lead groups of students on educational and recreational field trips Assist with in-classroom lessons at schools as needed
- Participate in annual program assessments; help monitor and evaluate programs as needed
- Participate in paid program trainings Represent EDI while participating in outreach events
- Assist with implementing aspects of the EDI’s Strategic Plan relevant to education
- Review guidelines for relevant prospective grant opportunities
- Communicate departmental needs to the Education Director
- Carry out other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: This is an entry-level position for someone with at least 2 years of experience working with youth and coordinating programs/events. Applicants should be highly organized and comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings. Patience working with children, attention to detail, and excellent communication are essential skills. Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required. A bachelor’s degree in education, conservation, or a related field is beneficial, but not required. Familiarity with national and state education standards (NGSS; CA Environmental Principles & Concepts) and inquiry-based learning concepts is a plus, but not required. HOURS: The position is as-needed, approximately 0–24 hours of work per week starting August 29th and is ongoing thereafter. Schedule is variable but field trips and events generally take place on weekdays 9:30am–1:00pm, 1–3 days/week, with some weekend events.
PAY: The pay rate is $23/hour.
