Energy and Sustainability Associate - Fellowship

OVERVIEW & IMPACT

San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) has a long-standing history in exhibiting sustainable innovation. Across its two campuses, Valley College and Crafton Hills College, and District HQ facility, the District has implemented extensive energy conservation and generation measures in efforts to reduce carbon emissions. SBCCD has taken strides to lead further among higher education institutions, undertaking a comprehensive strategic sustainability planning process in 2020 with 20 bold goals in carbon mitigation, energy, water, transportation, materials, curriculum, ongoing engagement and transparency. Through an innovative partnership between Southern California Edison and Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI), SBCCD will have the Fellow work to drive forward campus sustainability efforts.

In partnership with the SBCCD Facilities, Planning & Construction team, the Fellow will have the opportunity to make meaningful, substantial change on campus operations and community behaviors. They will also gain a breadth of exposure to technical analysis used in the energy and sustainability industry, such as greenhouse gas inventorying, cost benefit analysis, and energy auditing. They will also work directly with relevant District stakeholders and departments and the Districts sustainability consultant Arup, to gain insight on ongoing operations, as well as to engage and educate District stakeholders on sustainability strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with the District to improve building energy efficiency in support of SBCCD’s zero net energy goals.
• Audit district water use and waste patterns and provide recommendations to improve water efficiency and reduce waste.
• Create scope 3 emissions baselines. 
• Research current procurement practices and provide recommendations for sustainable procurement.
• Develop and distribute educational materials on energy and sustainability topics to influence behavior change.
• Helps develop the basis for the annual utility budgets; tracks energy consumption of buildings district-wide; records the impact of energy and greenhouse gas reduction measures.
• Assists in preparing administrative, statistical, analytical and narrative reports as well as recommendations relating to energy efficiency, waste reduction and sustainability programs; conducts additional research as necessary; makes recommendations on findings.
   

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• An educational background in a sustainability-related field or engineering (volunteer and internship experience will also be considered). While this is preferred, all candidates with experience in fulfilling responsibilities similar to the ones listed above are welcome to apply
• Basic level math and data analysis skills
• Familiarity with MS PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel
• Community engagement skills
• Communication and outreach skills

CLIMATE CORPS QUALIFICATIONS

• Availability for the full-time, 10-month Fellowship program, beginning in September 2022
• Climate Corps Fellows must have completed a 4-year degree by the time the program cycle starts in September 2022.
