The Education Program Assistant will have a passion for environmental and experiential education. She or he is an enthusiastic member of the education team and excited about building a comprehensive after school program and building community partnerships with outside organizations and communities for Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable or enthusiastic in learning about desert ecology, teaching, and have a passion for working with children and adults.

Summary

Primary Function/Purpose:

The Education Program Assistant will have a passion for environmental and experiential education. She or he is an enthusiastic member of the education team and excited about building a comprehensive after school program and building community partnerships with outside organizations and communities for Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable or enthusiastic in learning about desert ecology, teaching, and have a passion for working with children and adults.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Create partnerships with local school districts for afterschool program

• Create and facilitate afterschool program

• Create and facilitate virtual field trip program

• Support the creation of curriculum and facilitate in-person summer camp

• Create sustainable partnerships with community instructors

• Build and maintain evaluation practices for educational programs

• Schedule educational programs for after school, adult classes, and field trips

• Create and implement outreach program to go to schools and other community organizations

• Create and implement self-guided walking tour for children and adults

• Work with volunteers to effectively implement afterschool program, adult classes, and field trips

• Provide guided tours to children and adult audiences

• Train volunteers in program content for afterschool and field trip program

• Effectively implement and coordinate with staff and volunteers family nature play weekend program, Girl Scout events, and other family weekend events

Qualifications:

• Working towards a degree or have an associate’s degree in education, environmental studies, or related field

• Experience working with children of all ages

• Experience working with adults of all ages

• Experience in organizing programs and building community relationships

• Ability to hike on trails, and traverse stairs and uneven terrain while carrying equipment

• Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures

• Ability to learn and maintain program records database

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Excellent organization and team-building skills

• Knowledge of arid-lands ecology a plus

• Excellent computer skills

• Ability to work in a challenging, fast-paced environment

• Detail oriented, collaborative manner and strong work ethic

• Ability to work as part of a team

• Ability to demonstrate initiative, establish priorities, and meet deadlines

• Must be able to work weekends and some evenings

• Must have a valid state Driver’s License
