Summary

MOSS Program Hosts will oversee MOSS K12 Programs by hosting big group learning opportunities for all visiting school groups in morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. Members will be liaisons between field day instructors, teachers, students, chaperones, and MOSS Program Coordinator to ensure learning and wellness during programming. MOSS Residential and Outreach programs occur weekly at the UI McCall Field Campus, and AmeriCorps members will work together to cover necessary program

Member Activities/Duties: The members will greet student groups on campus, move them into living quarters, orient groups to MOSS guidelines and expectations, lead big group environmental and community-focused activities, and teach STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) Evening Programs to groups of 10-75 students and 1-15 adult teachers and chaperones during MOSS programs. AmeriCorps member Program Hosts will provide supplemental big group activities and reflections for student groups before and after student “field days” to bolster learning and engagement.

Requirements:

  • Must be U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent or commit to earning one prior to receiving award.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must be able to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through PCEI.
  • Must be able to work with children and complete required Protecting Minors Training per University of Idaho requirements.
  • Must complete and submit all necessary PCEI AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • Must commit to and attend and complete all PCEI AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings and national service days.
  • Must wear AmeriCorps uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.
  • Must have a cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team.
  • Must have regular and reliable attendance and dependability. 
  • AmeriCorps members can enroll in multiple terms of service that add up to the value of two full-time education awards. You can also serve additional terms but will not receive an additional education award.

Member Qualifications and/or Required/Preferred Skills

  • At least one year or similar experience working with students of various ages
  • Demonstrated ability to work with communities and people from diverse backgrounds in an understanding and problem-solving way
  • Demonstrated and expressed willingness to contribute to working toward a more equitable environmental education industry 
  • Willingness to work untraditional hours including evenings and some weekends depending on program needs.

Member Benefits Include

  • A taxable, monthly living allowance ($16,502.00/full-time member, or $8,251.00/parttime member, paid over the term of service).
  • Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members receive an education award that can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
  • Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable.)

Project Location and/or Transportation Needs: Most programming will occur on site at the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus. Transportation may be needed if AmeriCorps members choose to live off-site or if programming occurs at the local elementary or middle schools.

Dates of Service: Full-time: 11 months from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023

The Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute AmeriCorps host site selection is contingent upon continued funding from AmeriCorps.
