The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Great Lakes B-WET Program Specialist, a part-time position responsible for assisting in the management and support of the Great Lakes B-WET program. This position will be embedded (flexible to be virtual or in-person) with the staff at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Alpena, MI and the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL), Ann Arbor, MI.

Salary Range: $24.0000 To 27.0000 Hourly

Location:        Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Alpena, MI

Alpena or Ann Arbor, MI (or remote, in the Great Lakes region)

Supervisor:    Great Lakes B-WET Program Coordinator

Status:            Part-Time/Non-Exempt position (20-28 hours/week)

What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Great Lakes B-WET Program Specialist, a part-time position responsible for assisting in the management and support of the Great Lakes B-WET program.

Hosted and administered by Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Eastern Region of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, the Great Lakes B-WET program is an environmental education program that promotes place-based experiential learning for K-12 students and related professional development for teachers. B-WET fosters the growth of new, innovative programs and encourages capacity-building and environmental education partnerships in the Great Lakes watershed. The primary delivery of B-WET is through competitive grants that promote Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs). The MWEE is a learner-centered framework that focuses on investigations into local environmental issues and leads to informed action.  

This person in this position will be an employee of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, supporting the scope of a Cooperative Agreement with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. This position will be embedded (flexible to be virtual or in-person) with the staff at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Alpena, Michigan and the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL), Ann Arbor, Michigan.

What You’ll Do

Essential Responsibilities:

The Program Specialist will work with the Great Lakes B-WET team and the NMSF to do the following:   

  • Support grant administration, including assisting with review process facilitation, reviewing and tracking progress performance reports, managing data in multiple grants tracking systems, and copyediting funding opportunity language
  • Communicate with grantees via email and/or meetings, including providing guidance / answering questions related to program implementation
  • Create and manage content for website, social media, and other promotional outlets for the regional program
  • Assist with writing and copyediting program products and documents
  • Facilitate meetings and share information through webinars and/or other means, including supporting grantee community of practice for grantee sharing and collaboration
  • Represent B-WET at relevant regional or national meetings 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Who You Are 

Required Qualifications:

  • One or more years of professional experience relevant to duties (or equivalent volunteer experience)
  • Able to attend to details, effectively prioritize a variety of competing tasks under strict timelines
  • Familiar and comfortable with web-based content creation and management (such as social media posts or blog posts)
  • Skilled in adapting to various data management systems (such as spreadsheets and web-based platforms) 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with a variety of virtual platforms for meetings, presentations, and other programs (such as Google Meet, Zoom, or GoToWebinar)
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency Google Suite of tools
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with others
  • Self-starter who can work independently and work with a flexible schedule that may include an occasional evening or weekend.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Availability for occasional travel to destinations throughout the Great Lakes region
