Visiting Programs Interns support our visiting education programs. Primary responsibilities include assisting with delivering outdoor education programs for middle school, high school, and university students at the Island School. This position requires the ability to work long hours with a close-knit group of peers and live in an isolated community. Summary

Visiting Programs Interns support our visiting education programs. Primary responsibilities include assisting with delivering outdoor education programs for middle school, high school, and university students at the Island School. This position requires the ability to work long hours with a close-knit group of peers and live in an isolated community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to get valuable experience in organizing and delivering experiential learning programs.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Assist in executing the logistics to run successful educational programs (primary, secondary, high school, university)
  • Teach basic courses in marine biology, ecology, sustainable living, and environmental research
  • Serve as an assistant instructor for expeditions on campus and on the island that may include snorkeling, biking, camping, sea kayaking, hiking, and community outreach
  • Assist in care of Educational Programs shared equipment including, tents, kayaks, dorm supplies and bicycles
  • Learn to create and deliver morning exercise programs
  • Assist in monitoring the well-being of students and their chaperones/instructors
  • Leading tours for visitors on campus

Anticipated engagement dates for this program are November 1, 2022 through April 30, 2023. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Should have completed, be planning to complete, or in the process of completing an undergraduate degree in marine biology or education or relevant fields
  • Previous education or research experience and an active interest in marine conservation and environmental education is essential
  • Able to put in long hours of work in a variety of programming in land, sea, and weather conditions
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to lead exercise programs
  • Boat driving experience, SCUBA certification, WFR certification and sea kayak experience will be helpful but not essential
  • Strong swimming skills and comfortable in water of all depths
  • Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Fees

Interns are responsible for an internship fee of $1,200 per month. This includes: visa fees, shared dormitory style accommodation on campus, three meals a day in on-campus dining hall, airport transfers from Rock Sound Airport (airport code ‘RSD’), on-campus internet, professional development, and networking activities. Based on program-specific schedules, interns may have the opportunity to experience kayaking, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, community outreach, and island exploration.
