Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an energetic and creative individual to join our dynamic team of environmental education and outdoor recreation professionals. This part-time position will develop and implement a variety of hands-on agriculture/horticulture education recreational programs for all ages. The incumbent will assist in developing and facilitating nature-based camps and will also be a key member of our team in establishing and maintaining strong partnerships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Conduct and/or assist with developing agriculture/horticulture education programs for all ages and diverse audiences, including facility tours, curricular school programs, summer camp programs, public lectures, special events, outreach programs and field experiences in a variety of outdoor environments both on and off-site.
•Maintain garden areas, including but not limited to raised garden beds, container garden beds and in ground gardens. 
•Maintain garden areas including prepping, planting, harvesting, and irrigating
•Maintain a greenhouse
•Assist with planning and implementation of teacher workshops and special events
•Assist with the development of educational exhibits, and educational materials
•Assist with installation and maintenance of raised bed irrigation systems
•Assist with operation of the recreation center
•Assist with recreation programming as needed
•Maintain general housekeeping of garden area, greenhouse, outdoor storage areas and garden equipment
•May coordinate volunteer efforts
•Work as part of an overall team of program staff at the Northern Regional Recreation Center
•Follow the work plan as prepared by the supervisor
•Respond to emergency situations

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of experience in environmental education/interpretive program development

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Biological Studies, Education, Communications, or a related degree

Combination of relevant educations and relevant experience accepted? Yes

Licenses and Certifications: One of the following: Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG), North Carolina Environmental Education (NCEE) Certification, Master Naturalist Certification; Ability to obtain Certified Interpretive Guide within 1st year of employment; Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of applicable computer programs
