We are hiring a full-time Farm Manager to oversee and direct all growing activities at Seminary Hill Farm, Established in 2013, Seminary Hill Farm covers 10 acres of the 80-acre campus of MTSO and features three production greenhouses and six season-extension hoop houses. It is our mission to teach small-scale farming and produce good food for all in pursuit of a just, sustainable and generative world.

Summary

We are hiring a full-time Farm Manager to oversee and direct all growing activities at Seminary Hill Farm,  Established in 2013, Seminary Hill Farm covers 10 acres of the 80-acre campus of MTSO and features three production greenhouses and six season-extension hoop houses.  It is our mission to teach small-scale farming and produce good food for all in pursuit of a just, sustainable and generative world.  

The Farm Manager will direct and oversee all growing activities: soil health and composting, seeding, planting, irrigation, chemical-free weed and pest control.  Along with the CSA, Volunteer and Intern Coordinator, the Farm Manager will serve as the public face of the farm to the campus community and external stakeholders.  On-site residence is available but not required.  Full posting available at  https://www.mtso.edu/about-mtso/employment-opportunities/

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in regenerative agricultural practices including composting, vegetable production and soil health.  Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Understanding of whole-farm planning and management, crew scheduling, crop planning, and farm budgeting.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring and/or facilitating experiential learning.
  • Willingness and ability to be an integral part of a student-centered, inclusive campus community.

Primary responsibilities and duties

  • Oversee all aspects of vegetable and herb production:  seed starting, greenhouse management, field preparation, transplanting and weeding.
  • Manage agricultural and operational dimensions of the farm in ways that support the primary educational mission of the program.
  • Analyze soil to determine type and quantity of compost or other soil amendments required for sustainable and regenerative practices.
  • Source and purchase supplies, such as compost, seed and tools.
  • Operate, inspect and maintain tractor and other farm equipment.
  • Maintain proper planting and accounting records.
  • Work collaboratively with the CSA, Intern and Volunteer Coordinator to provide instruction to Seminary Hill Farm interns, volunteers and MTSO student workers, establishing seasonal goals for the team, planning daily activities, and mentoring students in their leadership and skill development.
  • Work collaboratively with the CSA, Intern and Volunteer Coordinator to facilitate and lead meaningful farm work for visiting classes or campus groups.
