The Avian Outreach Tech, Temporary will work with PARC’s banding program manager and avian research coordinator to develop outreach programing centered around the research at PARC. The outreach tech may also assist with avian research, which may include, but is not limited to, bird banding, surveying birds by sight and sound, and/or tracking birds using wildlife tracking technology.

Summary

The Avian Outreach Tech, Temporary will work with PARC’s banding program manager and avian research coordinator to develop outreach programing centered around the research at PARC. The outreach tech may also assist with avian research, which may include, but is not limited to, bird banding, surveying birds by sight and sound, and/or tracking birds using wildlife tracking technology.
 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Applicants must have at least a high school degree, or the equivalent, some experience with public science outreach, and some experience with bird research.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • The successful candidate will have an interest in science outreach and a basic understanding of avian ecology, the ability to interact well with people of all ages and backgrounds, an infectious enthusiasm for avian outreach, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong candidates will have experience banding birds or with other songbird field research and be able to identify eastern North American birds by sight and preferably by sound.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires extended periods of walking and standing.
  • Must be able to hike up to 6-10 miles per day in uneven or muddy terrain, sometimes in inclement weather (e.g., hot, cold, rain), and should be able to identify, or quickly learn to identify, eastern North American birds by sight and sound.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • The principle responsibility of this position is assisting the Banding Program Manager and Avian Research Coordinator with Powdermill’s avian outreach efforts.
  • This includes developing and implementing programming centered around PARC’s research efforts and interacting with the public.
  • This position may also require assisting the staff with research which may include extracting birds from mist nets, banding and collecting data from birds (may also include collecting blood or tissue samples), attaching transmitters to birds, tracking birds via radio telemetry, surveying birds by sight and sound, assisting with our flight tunnel, repairing nets, trimming vegetation around net lanes, and recording and proofing data. 
  • Will assist on other duties as assigned.
