The Site Steward is an Individual Placement AmeriCorps position under the auspices of Utah Conservation Corps. The AmeriCorps Individual Placement receives a bimonthly living stipend and educational award upon completion.

Summary

The Site Steward is an Individual Placement AmeriCorps position under the auspices of Utah Conservation Corps. The AmeriCorps Individual Placement receives a bimonthly living stipend and educational award upon completion.

The Steward is based at Professor Valley Field Camp, a rustic facility on private land located 20 miles from Moab, Utah. The camp surrounded by open space, world class views and spectacular night skies. The Field Camp has two yurts, 15 tipis and storage barn and is used for environmental/outdoor education.

The Site Steward primarily works with middle and high school groups though will also support a few adult and family programs. The Site Steward lives at the Field Camp in either a yurt or small RV unit. There is electricity, hauled culinary water, cell service, limited internet. Showers are available in town. During programs, meals are provided. The Steward must have own reliable vehicle to commute to and from town; official work-related mileage will be reimbursed.

  • Primary Location: Professor Valley Field Camp, Mile Marker 19.5, Hwy 128, Moab, UT

Duties:

  • Approximately 50% of the duties will be related to improvements and grounds work funded by Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation infrastructure grants. The remaining 50% will be duties in support of Environmental Education programs at the camp and at the CFI headquarters in Moab.
  • Perform removal of invasive plants and utilize in permaculture berms, do new plantings, monitor, and manage irrigation drip system.
  • Light camp facility upkeep such as seasonal tipi set up and take down, culinary water testing, routine cleaning, organizing supplies.
  • Assists with camping equipment and vehicle checks at the CFI headquarters.
  • Plan and lead short service-learning activities with school groups.
  • Assist camp cook during programs.
  • Drive crew shuttle for educational river trips.
  • Assist with one or two adult/public outreach events and service projects.
  • Assist with data, photography and interviews for grant reporting and media coverage.
  • Conduct Adopt a Site monitoring for archaeological site in Professor Valley.

Training/Professional Development

  • Organization mission, values, vision, long range plans
  • Field Camp and river operations.
  • Driver training (must be 21 years minimum for insurance.)
  • Permaculture, local flora, invasive weed identification and treatment, local fauna and history
  • Hand tools including power tools: drill/driver and weed trimmers
  • Outfitter style camp cooking
  • Volunteer and service-learning management

AmeriCorps Requirements (all below required)

  • Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must undergo and pass national Criminal History Check.
  • Eligible to serve in an AmeriCorps State/national term (two previous terms allowed) 
  • Commitment to completing your Term of Service.

Additional CFI Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift 30 lb
  • A valid driver's license, 21 and older to meet insurance requirements, provide Motor Vehicle Report, clean driving record for 3 years.
  • Successful applicant must provide own reliable vehicle that suitable for accessing site.
  • DOT medical examination certificate, current.
  • Minimum of Basic First Aid & CPR or better
  • Proof of Covid Vaccination
  • Be comfortable living in a remote location, at times entirely alone and at others with large groups up to 60 in number.
  • Enjoy working with youth aged 12-18.
  • Physically able to work outdoors 8-10 hours a day in a range of weather conditions.
  • Live on site at Professor Valley Field Camp; no pets, no tobacco use.
  • A positive and professional manner with diverse populations

Compensation

  • Housing Provided at Field Camp (Yurt or small RV) valued at $400/month
    • NOTE: no laundry provided. No pets. No tobacco use. Guest policy in effect.
  • Meals provided during programs on site.
  • Total living allownace $6,552.00 (Living allowance stipend is taxable and is disbursed on a bimonthly basis. The amount presented is the total gross amount. Forbearance on qualifying student loans may also be an option while in service.)
  • Education Award $2,474.27 (available upon completion of service term)
