The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) is seeking passionate and dedicated people to support spawner survey monitoring between September 2026 and March 2027. Monitoring Interns will be accompanied by NSEA staff and support thorough weekly surveying of salmon in creeks in Bellingham by walking through 2–3 miles of creek and visually looking for salmon and redds and collecting and recording data. This position provides opportunities to build up professional skills such as field work, data collection, and communication to benefit future career pursuits.

Summary

The dates of this position are August 25–March 31, one day per week between Monday and Friday. Priority given to those consistently available on Tuesdays. Weekly schedule will be one 7–10-hour shift depending on the length of the survey. The weekly survey may be rescheduled due to weather or other conflicts. When possible, the survey will be rescheduled for a day the intern is available, however hours are not guaranteed if a reschedule must be set for when the intern is not available. This position is contingent on funding. 

Employee Classification: Temporary, Part-time, Non-exempt 

Supervised by: Stewardship Program Coordinator

Responsibilities 

  1. Support weekly one-day surveys. 
  2. Always follow strict survey procedures and safety standards. 
  3. Maintain and clean equipment after each use. 
  4. Communicate effectively with Stewardship Program Coordinator and other NSEA staff. 
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • 18 years or older. 
  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Dependable with strong passion for NSEA’s mission. 
  • Able to work on a team. 
  • Able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. 
  • Able to stand, walk, lift and bend for up to 8 hours a day in all weather conditions 
  • Able to traverse miles of uneven ground safely and walk through and around creeks including navigating slippery surfaces, rocks, and steep slopes. • Available to work one full day between Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:30pm, each week. Priority will be given to those consistently available Tuesdays.

Desired Qualifications 

  • Experience with salmon species identification and spawner surveying methods. 
  • Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Compensation Information

Compensation includes a rate of pay of $19.13/hour. Employees earn 1 hour of sick leave per 40 hours worked.
