We seek an Associate Director of Student Life & Enrollment to play a multi-faceted leadership role at Seguinland Institute. This is an opportunity for someone who believes in experiential education and wants to be part of growing a dynamic nonprofit organization with a strong sense of mission. The Associate Director is a key thought partner within the leadership team and is integral to the student and alumni experience.

Summary

Our not-for-profit organization (founded in 2009) is composed of scholars, boat builders, artists, musicians, contemplatives, back-to-the landers, treehouse builders and education-reformers. We aim to influence the direction of higher education, to be a model for a new generation of schools, and to bend our existing institutions toward immersive whole-person programs that foster inquiry into the good life.

Key Responsibilities: 

The primary responsibilities for this position shift between program and non-program times. 

  • During programs, the primary responsibilities are in community building, student well being & mentorship, program coordination and facilities operations. 
  • Between programs, the primary focus is on recruiting, admissions and alumni relations. 
  • Our programs generally run September - November, mid-January, and February - May.

Community Building, Student Well Being & Mentorship  

  • Connect with students as a mentor and role model for building community 
  • Foster community by organizing weekly student meetings, occasional student community events and attending one weekday dinner during programs 
  • Support weekday field trips and lead some of our multi-day trips during program
  • Support and attend program events
  • Mediate student conflicts, including intra-cottage dynamics
  • Assess student well-being and utilize Seguinland Protocols to respond as needed, including communicating with parents, recontracting with students and connecting with outside resources 
  • Coordinate appropriate care for students with physical and mental health issues during on-duty periods (for example connecting them with our on-call nurse or on-call mental health consultant).
  • Document student incidents when on duty/ensure others document incidents if not on duty 

Program Coordination and Operations

  • Run weekly staff meeting during programs and follow-up on action items
  • Manage scheduling app to keep program staff on the same page and anticipate and respond to upcoming logistics/scheduling needs
  • Onboard, manage and supervise our Community Life Assistants, who provide evening/weekend on-call coverage as well as weekend trip leadership and program support.
  • Coordinate on-call coverage and review documentation of any incidents 

Note: Associate Director does not staff weekend or evening on call coverage themselves, except in extenuating circumstances

  • Coordinate work for part time in-program support persons.
  • Act as the point person for communication between students and staff 

Recruitment/Admissions 

  • Partner with Executive Director to develop and implement recruitment strategy including: 
    • Building relationships with counselors and coaches 
    • Attending key gap year fairs and other school fairs
    • Reviewing marketing and outreach strategies
    • Building partnerships and networking in the field 
  • Partner in admission, enrollment.
  • Spearhead communications with accepted students and families
  • Update our listings on key sites and publications
  • Maintain accreditations

Alumni Relations 

  • Spearhead alumni relations including 
    • Developing and implementing alumni engagement strategy
    • Coordinating and recruiting cohort representatives
    • Taking the lead on reunion planning and execution.
    • Create and support additional alumni programming 
    • Managing alumni blog and alumni newsletter

Operations in Facilities/Gear/Vehicles

  • Operations person for facilities
  • Coordinate setup and breakdown of student cottages and classroom/shared spaces
  • Coordinate care of gear: maintenance, inventory, upkeep, purchasing
  • Coordinate upkeep of vehicles: reset, servicing, maintenance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $60,000 per year (exempt position)
  • Health Insurance contribution: $750/month 
  • Dental Insurance contribution: $75/month 
  • IRA contribution
  • 3 Weeks paid vacation
  • Federal Holidays off 

Position Type: 

  • Exempt
  • Onsite with the option to be partially remote between programs. Our programs generally run September - November, mid-January, and February - May.  

Required Skills/Experience: 

  • 3+ years management experience
  • Experience working with young adults 
  • Mental health first aid training or equivalent experience
  • Drivers license and clear driving record 
  • Proactive and self-directed
  • Excellent people skills
  • Top Notch organizational and communication skills
  • Love of community and the outdoors
  • Generosity of spirit

Desired Skills Experience: 

  • Experience with nonprofits and/or education
  • Environmental or outdoor leadership experience
  • Comfort driving 15 passenger van or willingness to be trained.
