The Education Interpreter position is a versatile, entry-level position that exposes you to informal outreach programming as well onsite exhibit interpretation. The season begins now and will go through September 7, 2026 providing a great summer opportunity for students or anyone looking for a short commitment. Summary

Job Summary:

This position is designed to be an ambassador for the Aquarium through a variety of on-site and off-site educational programs. Duties include participating in offsite outreaches, member programs, supporting daily education and interpretive programs and engaging with guests.

Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies
  • Provide an exceptional visitor experience for all guests
  • Engage guests through daily shows, guided tours, and gallery interpretation
  • Participate in outreach programs
  • Assist and deliver educational programs in partnership with other departments and community groups.
  • SCA 1st Responder
  • Other duties as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Outstanding interpretive skills
  • Ability to adjust for the dynamic needs of audiences of all ages
  • Must be able to deliver interpretive programs in engaging and effective ways to groups of 10-200 people
  • Skills needed to combine creativity, enthusiasm, and exemplary teaching methods to engage visitors in science related activities
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Willingness to foster a growth mindset by celebrating the effort to improve as professionals, conservationists and community members
  • Ability to maintain a sense of humor 
  • Must be able to handle live animals
  • Adhere to uniform and personal appearance policy
  • Must have a working knowledge of Aquarium exhibits and animals
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings

Education and Experience Required:

  • Prefer some experience in a related field with demonstrated teamwork and interpretive skills

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED – Required to either possess or obtain prior to start date

Supervision of others:

  • N/A

Physical Requirements:

Often standing, carrying up to 50 lb and driving, sitting; average walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, balancing, pushing and pulling, crawling, computer and phone tasks.
 

Working Conditions:

Normal office environment, public contact, rotating shifts, weekends and required to wear a radio; outdoor work required.
