Summary
Science Educator

Alaska Geographic is currently seeking candidates with experience in outdoor, environmental, or science education who are excited to create meaningful connections for visitors of all ages to Denali National Park and Preserve.
Alaska Geographic is the official non-profit education partner of Alaska’s National Park Service. Together, we provide educational programs through the Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) in Denali. The MSLC is a cooperative effort of partners supporting education and research efforts in Alaska’s northern parks and public lands. Alaska Geographic supports the mission of the MSLC through a wide variety of education programs for all audiences. We focus on connecting visitors to their public lands through immersive, place-based education programs.
AK Geo offers presentations for tour groups, guided excursions into the park, youth programming, and multi-day field courses. We primarily serve adult visitors, and local youth and adults.
Science Educators are primarily responsible for delivering of a variety of informative and engaging science-based programs that will leave visitors with a lasting connection to Denali and a deeper appreciation of science and research in the park.
Responsibilities
These responsibilities and duties will be divided among multiple educators
Guide multi-day field courses
- Coordinate with the guest instructors (scientists, park staff, etc.) to plan materials, instruction, and itineraries for each program.
- Provide support to the guest instructor throughout the course with the daily schedule, camp management, risk management oversight, and general logistics.
- Clearly communicate safety protocols to participants, maintain safe practices following the scope of the AK Geo risk management policies, and respond to incidents and emergencies if they arise.
- Drive 12 passenger sprinter van on the park road (narrow, mostly gravel).
- Provide engaging, place-based science education specific to Denali for diverse audiences.
- Foster teamwork, a cohesive community, and positive group morale.
Assist with partner youth programming
- Collaborate with NPS Education team members to provide front country day and overnight science-based learning opportunities to local youth, primarily in first through eighth grade.
- Clearly communicate safety protocols, maintain safe practices following AK Geo and partner risk management policies, and respond to incidents and emergencies if they arise.
- Assist in managing group dynamics and fostering a positive learning environment.
Provide interpretive and educational programs within Denali National Park & Preserve
- Create cohesive, thematic, and engaging science-based content including information on park research and Denali’s unique ecosystems following interpretive best practices.
- Develop and deliver engaging one-hour presentations about science in Denali to diverse audiences. Many presentations include a food service component.
- Deliver engaging programming focusing on science and research in Denali to tour groups of diverse audiences on a 9-hour bus tour along Denali Park Road.
- Utilize a variety of teaching styles and techniques to engage a diverse audience in a dynamic setting for up to nine hours.
- Develop and deliver informal interpretive pop-up displays.
Requirements

- Experience in formal or informal education required, with a strong preference given to local candidates and those with an outdoor, environmental, or science education background.
- Experience with, and a desire for, living in remote locations and spending extensive time outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Backcountry experience including off trail travel, trip-leading and group management, and risk management in remote settings.
- Experience teaching and guiding both youth and adults.
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification or ability to obtain certification before beginning the position.
- Must be 21+ years of age with a valid driver’s license, five years driving experience, and a good driving record.
- All employees must be fingerprinted, submit a federal background check, and receive clearance from the Department of the Interior.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Compensation Information
