NC State University's Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center is seeking Outdoor Educators to join our team for our spring program season (March 2 - May 22, 2026) with opportunities to continue employment in our summer camp programs (June-Aug) and Fall programs(Aug-Nov). Staff provide instruction in Environmental Education and teambuilding on our beautiful 220 acres in the Piedmont of North Carolina. Staff receive $425-$450/week plus a private room in our staff house and most meals included.

DURATION:    This is a seasonal position beginning March 2, 2026 and ending around May 23, 2026. Staff with an interest will have an opportunity to continue work in our summer camp(June-Aug) and fall programs(Aug- Nov)

 

COMPENSATION:     $425 - $450 per week plus a private room in the staff house. Meals when working are also provided.  Some weekend work required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

We prefer applicants have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field but it is not required. Must be 18+ and have an interest in working with youth. Individuals must have a commitment to the environment, a love for working with kids, an interest in experiential education, and a ton of patience.   Creativity, enthusiasm, and a love for hard work in a team atmosphere are also crucial. Internships may also be available. 

 

DUTIES PERFORMED:

1) Facilitate group initiatives, team challenge course and high ropes elements with middle and high school students, as well as some adult groups in the Soaring Thru Spaces Program. This includes GriGri belay on the high ropes course. Instructors are responsible for the overall safety of their groups on the high ropes course. A 3 day High Ropes training is provided and staff are required to attend. Instructors do NOT have to be comfortable working at heights to facilitate our high ropes course.

2) Provide instruction for nearly 20 programs in environmental science and cultural history to elementary school students in the Environmental Education Program. Topics include aquatic ecology, forest measurements, predator/prey relationships, wildlife habitats, pioneer living history, canoeing and much more.

3) Enhance the mental, physical, and social development of the students participating in the program by being a positive role model and an excited leader.   

4) Participate in a 2 week paid staff training that prepares staff in content knowledge, program delivery and safety procedures. Spring 2026 training will be March 2 – 6 and 9 – 13. 

5) Assist in the day to day upkeep of all program supplies and program areas.

6) Instructors oversee all day and evening programs but no overnight supervisory duties in the student cabins is required during our fall and spring school group visits.
