Summary
Join us in building an inclusive outdoor learning community
At Foothill Horizons, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to connect with the natural world. We know that powerful learning happens when students see themselves represented in their mentors, and when educators bring a wide range of lived experiences, perspectives, and identities to the trail and classroom. We welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. If you care deeply about creating supportive, equitable and welcoming outdoor experiences for all youth, we want you here.
About the paid internship
This isn’t just a job — it’s a collaborative, community‑centered training experience. As a Naturalist Intern, you will:
- Lead groups of sixth‑grade students on hikes, hands-on science lessons, and nature exploration. You’ll create a positive,
inclusive atmosphere where all students feel seen, respected, and capable of learning. - Teach engaging, interactive nature, science and positive social experiences using clear, accessible language and culturally responsive teaching practices so all students can thrive regardless of background or familiarity with being outside.
- Coach high school counselors to support student well‑being and behavior in both outdoor and dorm settings, offering feedback and guidance to help create a safe, inclusive environment for all.
- Reflect on your own teaching and growth throughout the internship, with mentorship and ongoing support to foster your development as an equitable and responsive educator.
We’re looking for people who:
- Are excited to help students connect with nature and each other.
- Love the outdoors and want to grow as a reflective, inclusive educator.
- Are motivated to learn, grow, and reflect with openness to feedback and a commitment to improving.
- Value collaboration, respect, empathy, and community-building, while also having independence and initiative.
- Are willing and able to live on-site for the internship duration, walk/hike up to 5 miles/day and work in varied weather conditions.
- Have completed a 2-year or 4-year degree, or have 2 years cumulative experience working with children in a professional setting
- Have (or are willing to obtain) necessary safety certifications (First Aid, CPR), a valid driver’s license, and meet required background checks
- Bring any language abilities, cultural knowledge, or life experiences you have including multilingualism (e.g. Spanish fluency is a strong plus, but every language and background adds value).
Our commitment to you & community
We know that the strongest learning communities are built through respect, belonging, and mutual support. As part of our team:
- You’ll live onsite in free shared housing (private bedroom) and receive free meals during the week — so you’re part of a caring, tight‑knit community that values wellness, belonging, and mutual respect.
- You’ll be part of a team that values feedback at all levels of experience. We value continuous growth for all our staff.
- Work 30-45 hours per week at $16.90 per hour with overtime, paid training and conferences.
- Estimated total compensation valued at $42,000 for the entirety of the internship (includes housing and utilities).
