Summary
Position Overview
We are seeking a seasonal Early Childhood Environmental Educator based out of Maine Audubon’s headquarters at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth, Maine to deliver outreach programming in the greater Portland area. The Early Childhood Environmental Educator reports to the Early Childhood Education Manager and is responsible for delivering nature-based outreach programs at local preschools and family programs on site at Gilsland Farm. Our programs are designed to foster environmental literacy and build connection to the natural world in a fun, safe, and welcoming environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver developmentally-appropriate outreach and family programs tied to Maine Audubon’s mission;
- Be able to adapt to different early childhood audiences and settings;
- Work closely with Early Childhood Education Manager to coordinate program materials and schedule;
- Communicate professionally with teachers and caregivers.
Qualifications
- Experience and demonstrated ability working with children ages 2-5, ideally in outdoor or nature-based settings;
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching;
- B.A./B.S. (or be working towards one) in education, biology, or environmental studies preferred;
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and flexibility, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with others;
- Knowledge of, or interest in learning more about, Maine’s flora, fauna, and ecological concepts;
- Access to reliable transportation or a clean driving record;
- Adult/Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification preferred;
- Must pass a criminal background check. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements but believe that you would be a good fit for this position.
Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions
- Able to often lift objects up to 50 pounds when setting up program space or transporting program materials;
- Able to frequently hike all trails on Gilsland Farm property as part of program;
- Able to work outdoors in all environmental and weather conditions.
Compensation Information
Timing, Compensation, and Benefits
- Up to 10-15 hours/week, mostly on weekday mornings. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply and to include details about availability in their cover letters.
- Salary range: $16-18/hr, dependent on experience, responsibilities, and qualifications.
- Mileage reimbursed when driving personal vehicle to offsite programs.
