The Camp Cook is an essential community member of passionate educators and learners.  They provide more than just food, they offer thoughtful menus, comfort, and nourishment for all. The Camp Cook helps to plan menus, and cooks for the programs at the Coastal Discovery Center near Newport, Oregon or Hancock Field Station near Fossil, Oregon.

Seasonal; scheduled to work February – November 2026

Being a Camp Cook at our camps is more than just being a cook. In our communities, the cooks provide the comfort and feeling of home in each meal they provide. People tend to bond over food, and the cooks are a very important part of that bond. Camp Cooks get the opportunity to live, work, and play at our two locations: Camp Gray in Newport, Oregon, and Hancock Field Station located outside Fossil, Oregon. Explore the natural beauty Oregon has to offer, from the forests, beaches, and dunes of the Pacific coast, to the canyons, John Day River, and fossil and archaeology sites of the central Oregon desert. Position runs February 2026 through early November 2026. 

 

Qualified candidates will have, but not limited to: 

  • Combination of experience and education equivalent to a high school diploma; 

  • Experience working and/or cooking in a commercial kitchen, with the ability to cook meals and baking from scratch; 

  • Current Oregon Food Handlers Card; 

  • Valid driver’s  license;  

  • Meets OMSI’s driving standards, which includes a completing a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check, is required for Camp Hancock and preferred for Camp Gray;  

  • Must be at least 18 years old to operate, repair, or clean power-driven food slicers, grinders, choppers and mixers;  

  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check, reference checks,  and American Camp Association (ACA) background checks (& on an annual basis).

Compensation Information

$146.96 per day, plus housing and meals 

 Position is eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: 

  • Up to 2 weeks of vacation per year with no waiting period.
  • Up to 2 weeks of sick time per year with no waiting period.
  • Rehires within a year will have their sick balance at the time of termination reinstated. (Hours accrue up to 520 hours and carry over year to year);
