This position is responsible for helping with, managing, and coordinating the Zoo's education programs that include, but are not limited to: Zoo Camps, Tots and Turtles toddler program, field trips, Flashlight Safaris, and behind-the-scenes experiences. This position also assists with our youth mentoring program, Zoo Crew. A large focus of this position is curriculum development and requires a strong background in environmental education resources and techniques.

Summary

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain the Zoo’s database for education programs.
  • Communicate accurately, positively, and timely with the parents of program attendees.
  • Develop, coordinate, conduct, and evaluate a multi-disciplinary conservation education program for children and youth, seniors, and/or special populations.
  • Develop and review educational content of all programs for an intended audience of varying ages.
  • Assist in the management of Zoo Educators and Youth Volunteers; assist with training for staff development, recruits, and train and coordinate staff participating in education.
  • Assist the Director of Education in establishing and maintaining successful partnerships with local organizations, schools, and other key community groups to ensure ongoing success and attendance of education programs.
  • Lead educational tours for schools and external groups through the Zoo facilities when needed.
  • Assist at special events and rentals as needed.
  • Perform occasional tasks outside of the Zoo.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Talents and Qualifications 

  • Background facilitating or teaching youth in an education setting or related experience required, with a setting of environmental education strongly preferred.
  • The ability to possess and exuberate the Zoo’s core values.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to proficiently work in a variety of databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Must be detail oriented and possess exceptional organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write and speak in an educated manner.
  • Valid driver’s license with proof of insurability.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to both indoor and outdoor conditions. This position may also be exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions; the environment may consist of wet, hot, or muddy conditions. Must be able to work some nights, weekends and holidays.

Compensation Information

This position offers a fixed salary of $46,000 annually and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and more.
