Help bring the joy of nature to kids, and take the classroom to the woods! Join Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania as part of our education team working with 5th graders for the month of October, 2025. Stay at a beautiful resident camp location in Stoystown, in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania. Most weekends off, training is included.

Summary

Educators work outdoors with small groups of fifth-grade students, their teachers, and high school students who serve as camp counselors. The camp program is a core part of the FCASD fifth-grade Science and Social Studies curricula. 

Educator duties include:

  • Leading engaging environmental education lessons and activities in outdoor/trail settings
  • Helping to train and mentor high school students serving as camp counselors
  • Leading campfires, and group activities/games
  • Supervising student daily routines, and managing program materials and supplies
  • Maintaining a positive, safe, and healthy experience for all participants.

Employment Period:  September 30 until October 31, 2025. Room and board provided on-site throughout employment period. Most weekends off except Oct 4-5.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Employment contingent on obtaining background clearances as required by the state of Pennsylvania (fees reimbursed) in a timely manner
  • Degree in environmental or outdoor education, education, environmental studies, natural sciences, or related field, or prior relevant experience
  • Ability to work well with all ages (upper elementary, high school, adult) and in teams
  • Willingness to work outdoors in a rural/natural setting in varying weather conditions
  • Positive, flexible, and creative attitude
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of, or interest in ecology and regional history
  • Must enjoy autumn in the Laurel Highlands on Allegheny Mountain!

Preferred but not required

  • First Aid/CPR (if not current, training will be provided)

Additional Details: 

Employment term includes one week of training/prep work, 3 weeks of camp. Most weekends off except Oct 4-5. Room and board provided onsite throughout the term.

Compensation Information

$3,840 for the term. Additional compensation available ($300-$900) for cabin supervision duties as needed.
