Forest School Educator

River Gorge Forest School is seeking a compassionate, creative, and flexible part-time teacher with the potential to become full-time to lead a combined 2nd–3rd grade class in an outdoor, experiential learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a passion for nature-based education, experience working with elementary-aged children, and a strong foundation in both classroom and behavior management. A background in special education is highly desirable to support a diverse group of learners.
 

Job Title: 2nd–3rd Grade Teacher
Location: River Gorge Forest School – www.rivergorgeforestschool.com
Employment Type: Part-Time with the potential to increase to Full-Time
Schedule: Mornings 5 days per week, August - May

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences in alignment with forest school pedagogy and state standards.
• Create a nurturing, inclusive environment that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and a love of learning.
• Use responsive classroom management strategies rooted in respect, empathy, and consistency.
• Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners.
• Collaborate with staff to integrate outdoor education themes, seasonal rhythms, and project-based learning.
• Communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and colleagues.
• Maintain safety protocols and manage risk in an outdoor environment.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
• Experience teaching or leading children in elementary grades (preferably 2nd–3rd)
• Familiarity with forest school principles and outdoor experiential learning
• Strong classroom management and communication skills
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions

Preferred:

• Licensure or certification in Elementary or Special Education
• Experience with multi-age groups and/or alternative education models
• First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Forest Teacher certification (or willingness to obtain)
