Wauhatchie Forest School is seeking nature loving educators who are intentional and reflective in their work with children and who are looking to grow professionally through mentorship and teamwork within a supportive community of outdoor practitioners. We are hiring 1st, 4th, and 5th grade lead teachers that will foster and facilitate the intellectual and social development of the children in an outdoor environment for the 2025-2026 school year.

Summary

The Lead Classroom Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing engaging, standards-based instruction to meet the diverse needs of students. This role involves leadership responsibilities within the classroom and school, ensuring best teaching practices, collaboration with colleagues, and fostering a supportive learning environment. Teaching this class in the forest includes observing and assessing class interests, planning and implementing lessons that expand on current interests, and creatively documenting class lessons to showcase the progress of the students while following our forest specific learning frameworks. The Forest School Lead Teacher will spend extended periods of time outdoors in all weather, including hiking and moderate physical challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction & Curriculum Development:
    • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with state and district curriculum standards.
    • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and abilities.
    • Address and meet the unique learning needs of students with IEP or 504 plans (we call ours Learning Success Paths)
    • Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments, adjusting instruction as needed.
  • Classroom & Behavior Management:
    • Establish and maintain a structured, inclusive, and positive classroom environment.
    • Implement classroom management strategies that promote respect, responsibility, and engagement.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
  • Leadership & Collaboration:
    • Serve as a mentor to fellow teachers and contribute to professional development initiatives.
    • Collaborate with colleagues, administration, and support staff to enhance student success.
    • Participate in school-wide initiatives, Learning Success Path meetings, and parent-teacher conferences.
    • Maintain open communication with parents/guardians to support student learning and development.
  • Student Support & Engagement:
    • Build strong relationships with students to support their academic, social, and emotional growth.
    • Address diverse learning needs through interventions, accommodations, and enrichment activities.
  • Professional Expectations:
    • Attendance at all planned school events, weekdays and weekends
    • Attendance at all staff meetings
    • Demonstrate loyalty and commitment to Wauhatchie School and all staff members as a positive team player
    • Participation in forest school research studies and daily reflective journaling
    • Willingness to be observed periodically by teacher trainees and other professionals

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (Master’s preferred).
    Certification: Valid TN Teaching License (Elementary Education).
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience (leadership experience preferred).
  • Strong understanding of child development, instructional best practices, emergent education practices, and classroom management.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Passion for fostering a love of learning and student success.
  • Love of nature and comfort in an immersive nature classroom

Compensation Information

Salary range: $30,000 - $38,000
