As a Prep Cook in the Opal Creek Kitchen, you’ll support a dynamic and collaborative team to execute delicious and nourishing meals to hungry kids and staff in a beautiful environment. The semi-open kitchen lends itself towards a vibrant community-oriented dining hall, where you’ll have the opportunity to greet and interact with students, campers, and staff. Your backdrop will be the forests, creeks, and waterfalls of Silver Falls State Park, Oregon’s most beloved and largest state park and the ancestral home of the Kalapuya and Molalla Tribes. Staff cabins are available for those wanting to immerse themselves in the wilderness during their employment.

Summary

Position type: Full time, seasonal

Season: May 1st – June 8th, 2025; possible extension to fall season

Location: Silver Falls State Park, Sublimity, Oregon (60 miles from Portland, Oregon) 

Compensation: $16/hr; 2 days PTO

Perks: Meals provided for trainings and when students are on-site/Basic housing on site and/or staff housing in Salem area/Required certifications sponsored (Food Handlers Cert/CPR)

Program: Opal Creek Outdoor School 

Work schedule: Mondays-Fridays; 32-40 hrs/week

Reports to: Food Service Manager, Programs Director

What We’re Looking For

We are less interested in the titles you’ve held and more interested in what you’ve actually done and who you are. A successful candidate will have experience with some combination of the following: 

  • 1+ years with food preparation experience in a high-volume, commercial, or camp-like kitchen
  • Experience working with youth
  • Strong hospitality skills
  • Clear and adaptable communication skills
  • Experience with a diversity of communities and cultural backgrounds, especially Latiné
  • Safe food handling practices
  • Able to pass a criminal background check
