The Western Flyer Foundation is seeking a dedicated and passionate Education Manager to lead our education programs on land and aboard the historic vessel Western Flyer. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts while inspiring future generations through the integration of marine science, history, and art.

Summary

About the Western Flyer Foundation

The Western Flyer Foundation was inspired by the legacy of author John Steinbeck, marine ecologist Ed Ricketts, and their 1940 expedition to the Gulf of California aboard the Western Flyer. The iconic 77’ wooden vessel has been carefully restored and reconfigured as a platform for marine science research and education. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Foundation’s mission is to stir curiosity through marine research, education, and a blend of science and art inspired by John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts, and their journey on the Western Flyer. Learn more at www.westernflyer.org.

The Western Flyer Foundation offers a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of ocean scientists, artists, writers, and conservationists through hands-on, experiential programs aboard the Western Flyer.

Position Summary

The Western Flyer Foundation is seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and visionary educator to take on the exciting and dynamic role of Education Manager. This position offers the opportunity to lead and expand our education programs, refine existing offerings, and develop innovative initiatives that inspire curiosity and provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities well beyond traditional marine science experiences.

We are looking for a creative thinker who can design and implement immersive programs that uniquely integrate marine science and humanities (literature, writing, art), actively engaging students in meaningful and impactful ways. Taking full advantage of the Western Flyer's rich story and legacy, the Education Manager will ensure these programs are grounded in the vessel’s unique history, fostering a deeper connection to science, exploration, and creativity.

This role requires someone ready to hit the ground running to plan and execute this year’s dynamic summer and fall programs. If the timing of the hire aligns, the Education Manager may have the rare opportunity to join the Western Flyer during part of its 85th anniversary return trip to the Gulf of California this spring.

Compensation Information

Salary: $75,000–$85,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Exceptional candidates with significant expertise may be considered at a salary of up to $90,000.

  • Employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life (including AD&D) insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan: Employer match of up to 5%, with immediate vesting.
  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and holidays.
  • A flexible work schedule and opportunities for professional development.
