The Environmental Education Manager oversees our environmental education staff and our exotic animal care department.

Summary

Environmental Education Manager (Full-Time) 

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Environmental Education Supervisor position is a full-time, non-exempt position working primarily Tuesday-Saturday from 8:30-4:30 (35 hours), although some early/evening hours and scheduled special events will be required. This position will manage all year-round environmental education staff and assist with management of seasonal staff, volunteers and interns.  This position will also oversee our exotic animal care, including managing Animal Care staff, creating care plans, liaising with veterinarians, and organizing our off-site Discovery Spaces. This position will also be responsible for teaching natural history, farm, and physical science-based school programs, after schools, and public programs, as well as on-site and traveling summer group programs and farm tours. 

Specifically, the Environmental Education Supervisor (Full-Time) will 

  • Manage part-time and full-time env. education staff, assist w/ intern and volunteer supervision 
  • Serve as site manager for farm in absence of Farm Manager and Assistant Manager 
  • Manage evaluation, timesheets, and associated paperwork for staff 
  • Serve as an alternate director for SM&NC summer camp 
  • Manage our exotic animal care, including direction of animal care staff, creation of care plans, liaising with veterinarians, overseeing permits, working with Operations team on building and exhibit maintenance, and organizing installations for our off-site Discovery Spaces. 
  • Teach educational programs for predominantly preK-5th grade students on a variety of natural history, astronomy, and farm-based topics, both onsite and as a part of SMNC in the Schools. 
  • Teach after school, scout, and public programs on natural history/farm/science topics, both onsite and as a part of SMNC in the Schools and keep curriculum records on these programs
  • Staff and support SM&NC special event weekends, such as Harvest Festival and Spring on the Farm
  • Ensure that programs promote responsible environmental education and support SM&NC mission
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications & Essential Skills:

 

Minimum of three years relevant, professional related experience preferred

  • Experience managing staff, interns, and/or volunteers a plus 
  • Minimum B.S. in biology, environmental science, education, or related field
  • Experience teaching environmental education curriculum and working with exotic animals
  • Experience directing or serving in a supervisory capacity in a summer camp setting preferred; certified as a CT Camp Director or the ability to become so a plus 
  • Must possess a maturity to have professional, respectful demeanor with Board, major donors, and other key business contacts acting with discretion and a keen understanding of confidentiality.
  • The position requires excellent communications skills, oral and written, as well as the ability to multitask and think creatively on program development and implementation.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, bend, stretch, and stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, sit, walk, and/or run.
  • Excellent Internet and research skills. Must be well-organized and detail-diligent with ability to perform your own administrative work.

Compensation Information

Pay: $45,000.00 - $48,000.00 per year
