The Backcountry Ranger position is a 10-12 week paid internship through the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness and the Kootenai National Forest, located out of the Trout Creek Ranger Station in Trout Creek, Montana. Spend a summer in the wild working on trails, participating in community outreach, developing trail and leadership skills, and patrolling the Scotchman Peaks Recommended Wilderness Area. You will receive intensive training and education in natural resource management from an interdisciplinary, field-based perspective.

Summary

WHO: Applicants should have experience and interest in the duties described. This physically arduous job is often exposed to mountain weather. The ideal applicant is passionate about stewardship of wild lands, interested in a career in natural resource management, and comfortable in public situations, including presentations.

WHAT: The Backcountry Ranger’s primary duty is to patrol the Scotchman Peaks Recommended Wilderness Area to educate visitors and protect the area’s wild character. They will receive training and education in natural resource management from an interdisciplinary, field-based perspective. This is a shared position between the Cabinet Ranger District of the KNF and FSPW. Work will also occur in the Three Rivers Ranger District of the KNF and in parts of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. Cabinet RD is on the cutting edge of backcountry stewardship.

WHEN:10-12 week program from June through August.

WHERE: Trout Creek, MT. Government housing is available

Compensation Information

Hourly wage of $12/hr, plus numerous official trainings and certifications (wildland fire, chainsaw, crosscut, defensive driving, First Aid/ CPR), free housing, and an exceptional career/life experience. Reliable transportation required; mileage will be reimbursed.
