Summary
Hub Farm Educator Job Duties
Education Programs:
- Plan and lead pre K-12 field trips, internships, and other educational programs
- Plan and facilitate hands-on activities for Career & Technical Education classes and internships
- Develop curriculum and new educational programs in collaboration with teachers and content specialists in alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
- Assist with program evaluation and data collection
Facility Operations:
- Collaborate with Hub Farm Staff to maintain campus grounds (e.g., assisting with repairs, landscaping, tool inventory, recordkeeping, etc.)
- Maintain an educational vegetable garden
- Care for perennial crops and facilitate tree propagation
- Assist with maintaining physical assets (e.g., greenhouse, animal enclosures, tools, etc.)
- Ensure livestock health and safety - Coordinate the maintenance of multiple beehives with Durham County Beekeepers
Association Volunteer Coordination and Community Engagement:
- Develop and contribute to outreach events
- Lead instruction and develop content workshops, teacher trainings and family programs
- Facilitate volunteer workdays
- Build and maintain community partner relationships
Clerical:
- Assist with grant applications, strategic planning, and other organizational duties
- Contribute to media & communications
- Coordinate purchasing and organization of supply needs with Program Manager
- Liaise with school-based staff, other district employees and community partners
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: The Hub Farm Educator is inspired by the DPS Hub Farm mission and has good interpersonal and communication skills with a range of age groups. The Hub Farm Educator has demonstrated experience in curriculum development, volunteer management, and outdoor education. The Hub Farm Educator has experience in sustainable agriculture and horticulture, preferably in the southeastern United States. The Hub Farm Educator is committed to land stewardship and equity in outdoor education. The Hub Farm Educator is a self-starter and well-organized; they are able to prioritize and delegate tasks efficiently.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Science or a related field; certified teaching experience OR two years comparable experience; CPR/First Aid trained; familiarity with hand tools, power tools and other farm equipment.
Working Conditions: The Farm Educator must be comfortable spending the majority of their time working outdoors in all weather conditions, year-round. This is a physically-active position, so this person must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, to bend at the knees and hips, and lift up to 50 pounds. This position will have occasional evening and weekend duties.
