Be responsible for planning, scheduling, organizing, and conducting various environmental, nature, and outdoor recreational programs associated with the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center (SOAC). Duties and responsibilities include working with diverse audiences, ranging from preschoolers to senior citizens, to develop, promote, and lead programs and activities, assisting the SOAC Manager with the development and maintenance of exhibits, and general monitoring of SOAC facility and patrons during business hours—reports to Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Program Coordinator.

Summary

HIRING PAY:  $17.90 - $19.69/hr

In addition to base pay, this part-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus and a longevity bonus.      

JOB DUTIES

  • Works closely with SOAC Program Coordinator to create, plan, and develop nature, environmental & outdoor recreational programs for all ages.  Programs will be high quality, interactive, and engage participants in interdisciplinary activities related to STEM/STEAM objectives and connected to the SOAC exhibits
  • Facilitates or leads programs, indoors and out, while utilizing the resources of all parks within the system
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of new and existing exhibits
  • Assists with outreach initiatives to promote and drive traffic to the SOAC and to encourage community participation in SOAC programs
  • Assists in building partnerships with schools and businesses
  • Submits requests for or purchases equipment or other materials as needed for programs; tracks inventory and funds spent
  • Facilitates and monitors independent recreation usage in Adventure Rooms; works safely, observing all OSHA, Federal, State, and City regulations; reports any accidents immediately to supervisor; administers CPR and first aid until qualified medical personnel arrives, if necessary
  • Occasionally travels to schools, senior centers, & local organizations to present programs
    Leads programs and guides activities for groups visiting SOAC outside of regular business hours (camps, lock-ins, special events, etc.)
  • Assists with planning, coordination, and production of all large events conducted by Smyrna Parks and the Town of Smyrna
  • Attends all staff meetings, workshops, and conferences as required
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; performs data entry functions by keying data into the computer; verifies the accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and other programs
  • Performs various administrative tasks such as creating records, reports, correspondence, etc. using word processing; receives, monitors, and directs incoming calls; files and maintains records appropriately
  • Opens and closes the facility; operates the cash register, accepts and processes payment of admissions, memberships, and programs; performs daily balances and reports any discrepancies immediately to supervisor
  • Sells and tracks inventory of retail items
  • Performs general housekeeping to ensure the facility is clean and neat to the public; performs routine maintenance on equipment; reports any malfunctioning equipment to supervisor
  • Leads private party rentals held within the facility
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by SOAC Program Coordinator and Manager

Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License
Must be comfortable working at a height of 20 or more feet
Must also be willing to learn belay and rope safety techniques which include the ability to properly fit climbing equipment on quests and familiarize them with the safety equipment they will be using, conduct safety demonstrations for guests (physically climb the rock wall), and conduct and document daily inspections of the climbing course and safety equipment. 
Must also have a current CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain one within 30 days of employment
Familiarity with computers as needed for office work; proficient in Microsoft Office

Education / Experience
Must have one of the following
1. Minimum of 2 years of college coursework with an emphasis in parks and recreation, biology, education, natural science, natural history, environmental education, environmental science, art or related field

2. 6 months of demonstrated teaching experience or experience in program planning, presenting to and leading groups in an outdoor recreational/environmental setting

3. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position
